Every city has them but some more than others. I used to live on Powell Street many years back and would often resort to just walking in the street opposed to battling sidewalk space with the clumsy toddler minded tourist bumping up and down the sidewalks.
Here in San Francisco a portion of the Hotel Tax goes towards funding the arts. So remember that when irritated by the map wielding/ bike renting/ Fisherman's Wharf bound T-Dogs. High five them and remember that everyone's a tourist at some point.

It's November. Mercury is in retrograde. Giants won the World Series, Obama won the president race, US drones are getting shot out of the sky, stores are ready to sell you EVERYTHING for Black Friday sales, and I don't think Santa is bringing me anything for Christmas this year. Whew, but back to Free Fridayz. Last week there was a decent turnout of drawings but not that many votes, which led to a tie. Which led to an official tie breaking decision by me. The winner of last weeks Free Fridayz goes to #16 by Solange who has won themselves a TShirt by Mel Kadel. It was a nice drawing and quite witty. Way to go.
There are some pretty nice entries this week. I had to keep a few out because they weren't in .jpeg format, didn't go with the theme or lacked blood, sweat and tears. Free Fridayz is transcending to the next dimension. To go where no drawing has gone before, which makes me think about space tourism. Over here in SF, the tourists are a bunch of bobble heads that block the sidewalk staring at food menus and store front pastries. Crowding shopping malls in their last chance to get a pair of denim. And they are all photographers now. A bunch of Ansel Adams. I pray to the Universe that if we ever have space tourism in this life-time, that these tourists travel with much more dignity and respect to the culture and places they visit or perhaps just start now. -Joe

It's Free Fridayz time again. I bet you all are wondering who one last weeks theme, Ghostbusters? There were so many votes. Great participation everyone. But check this, a lot of votes did not count because they did not log-in. The drawer who got the most logged votes was number #1, Amia from Spokane Washington. Way to go!! You won,
We had big turn out this week for Talking Heads. The drawings look AWESOME. I don't have a binder full of women. If I did, they'd be aging in a box at a dusty storage unit having lesbian sex together. Thanks for all of you that format your drawings to file, size and make it presentable. The stakes are about to get raised for the next sessions. Things been a bit lenient for this first phase of FF. Some of you are new to the game. Drawings have to display efforts according to the theme. Gotta see the words Fecal Face (FF) and have a level of presentation and be sent as a jpg. Just a little cooperation makes my job easier. I like easy, just like you. And it's always nice when you all include your city, state, planet to represent. See the guidelines below.
And remember, Have your homies log-in to vote!!! -Joseph Magnano
Next week's theme: Weekends
Submission Guidelines for next week:
We had some great entries this week that we couldn't run, either because they weren't sized right or had nothing to do with theme. Just to be clear, when the next theme comes out the old theme is officially over. Please don't send in more submissions for old themes. It makes up feel bad when you send us stuff and we can't post it up so please read the guidlines below:
- This is a drawing/ illustration fun contest. Photography generally not accepted.
- The size formatting is 695 pixels in width OR length. So if you have a long skinny one, please make sure it is not over 695 in length or we will not be able to see it well.
- Name your submission your first and last name. Example: john_doe.jpg
- Include the words "Fecal Face" somewhere in the art so we know you created it (please do not to add it in later with Photoshop).
- One submission per person by Friday October 12th at 12pm PST.
- If you have a website (or two) please specify which one you would like me to link in the body of your email. Also, let us know where you're from! Send it all to freefridayz (at) fecalface.com.

I'm feeling the Holy Ghost around here. The momentum of Free Fridayz is happening. Last week's winner was a tie between Alain Cheung (Montreal) and Ishi (Melbourne). Congrats to you two. You get socks. (Reminds of what would have been a depression era contest winning) Alain would have took the victory if all the votes would have logged in. Similiar to registering to vote. TELL ALL YOUR HOMIES TO LOG IN WHEN THEY VOTE! (Facebook, Disqus, Twitter, Google...)
This weeks entries are looking nice. I'm diggin the Ryland Fortie piece. Big Props to Eric Sauve for hitting up a canvas. Keep pushing those brushes.
Next weeks theme, dedicated to political shenanigans, presidential debates and pigeons will be Talking Heads.
Next weeks theme: Talking Heads

Man, it was really scraping by this week. Entries were on the endangered list (well, it is the 1st one after a long break after all). Thanks to all that did take the time to send some original artwork. Its nice to see draw'ers poping up globally for Free Fridayz. Well, over here in S.F. were heading into fall. That means the arrival of time change, presidential elections, box stores throwing up Christmas shit, the flu, I.P.A drinking and Halloween. What inspires you when you hear Ghost Busters.
Next week's theme: Ghost Busters

Email in your New Year's Resolution themed drawings (freefridayz (at) fecalface.com). We'll make sure the prize is a good one to start 2012.

Everyone's version of Sexy is obviously different. Maybe you're into latex, big muscles, thigh highs, shaved heads, big/ small/ inbetween, intelligence, humor, we all have certain things that turn us on both physically and mentally. For Peekaso it's a overflowing plate of bacon.
Sexy facts?:
*In Hong Kong, adulterous husbands get more than a steep monthly alimony payment – a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her husband if he cheats on her – but she may only do so with her bare hands.
*Semen contains zinc and calcium, both of which are proven to prevent tooth decay.
*Hitler and Napoleon both had only one testicle.
*Average number of times a man will ejaculate in his lifetime: 7,200
*According to Archives of General Medicine, coffee drinkers have sex more frequently and enjoy it more than non-coffee drinkers.

We were away from Free Fridayz for a bit while summer commenced - people traveled, sun-bathed, swam, drank adult drinks, etc...
Now that all (or most) are back to work and school, let's get drawing again... and we'll get back to giving away prizes to those who submit the best drawings. --> onto the submitted drawings.

Everyone's on vacation. You're most likely checking Fecal Face from your IPad on a beach in the middle of the Bahamas sipping on a drink that has an umbrella sticking out of it while crabs nibble at your toes. Is it warm and beautiful? Are there tropical birds shitting on your shoulder? I wouldn't know.
We walk up and down Haight Street every day coming and going from Fecal Face. It's so easy to spot the tourists with their maps out, cameras hanging on their chests casually strolling up to Haight and Ashbury. On those beautiful crisp mornings, they make me wish I was in total vacation mode. I would buy them a crepe and an ice cream sandwich in appreciation.

I think it would be a great time to publicly thank Ashley Taylor who puts together Free Fridayz here at Fecal Face every week. Not only does she do that, but she also has spent a serious amount of Saturdays gallery sitting at the old Gough St. space while we played in the sunshine.
Friggen Fraggen theme submitted by Travis Gillan (Denver, CO). |
What you should know about Ashley is that she takes wonderful photos. Check her site and see for yourself: 4blankwalls.com
So how about a short rant unrelated to how rad Ashley is. In fact, the rant will have nothing to do with Ashley at all. It'll just be written under the public thank you and your photos are rad words I wrote above. Maybe it would be best if I started a new paragraph to visually separate as well.
Did you know that The Animal Control and Welfare Commission here in San Francisco recommends that the city ban the sale of tropical fish and gold fish?.
Have you ever eaten a gold fish? I ate 3 in one night (I need to dig up the footage). 4 other Howard House residents downed the lil' guys too. This is no rant. It's a silly state of fact.
If you must, don't chew. Best with a large glass of water. -Trippe

It's going to rain this weekend here in San Francisco... Like record breaking amounts of rain. What's up with that shit?! It hasn't rained this much since like 1864 or something.
And we had the whole weekend off to play as well. That's rare. We normally have to work on Saturdays, but because we're between shows, it's a 2 day weekend but you know what? We're just going to work... Well, at least on Saturday. Maybe the rain will break on Sunday... That's the goal.
Tonight, we're going to put on rain gear, grab a bottle of wine and walk around San Francisco and pretend we're on vacation in Alaska. -Trippe

Fudge this noise, it's freakin' Friday, and we've had a crazy ass few months. Sometimes you gotta bail from work early and go for bike ride. The weather is starting to get nice and fresh air is in dire need.
You know what's a lot of fun? Ride across the Golden Gate Bridge and then take the ferry home. Don't buy the alcohol on the boat. It's expensive. Bring your own. They don't care, but don't tell them Fecal Face told you to do it. They might get upset. -Trippe |

So yes, the voting will remain the same. You need to login in order for your vote to count, but as many of you have suggested, it seems that some of the votes are less than honest. A solution suggested by many of you is to start a discussion within the comments throughout the week, and in the end, Fecal Face should choose the winner considering your votes and comments. Sound good? Is Free Fridayz still totally Stupid? You decide.

Walk. View art and music. Drink a beer. Eat a sandwich. High five a couple friends. Try not to fall. Enjoy the locals. Smell the air. Toast of the town you are... What are you doing later? Maybe we should get some beers and play music... Or we could just stay here and drink some more... Or, go home and light a tree on fire. Stand back and admire your skill at lighting matches. Maybe I'll smoke next to the fire and wonder what would have happened if you said hello to that cute girl who like was totally checking you out. Your friend totally saw it, but you're always a little scared... Well, here we are now. Maybe put the fire out and crash. Listen to your favorite album while making a piece of toast and think about going surfing tomorrow morning. That'll feel nice.

Oh man, Nasal Issues suck. Can't breath. Horrible way to try and get to sleep. Gives me huge anxiety just thinking about it... You know what? Fight it. Stay up all night and draw for Free Fridayz. Listen to loud music and scare it away. Maybe some death metal? Whiskey? 3 packs of Winstons?... Yeah, maybe not. Put that sniffer over a pot of steaming water. Mix in some gasoline.

Man, it's been a month since the last time we added a Free Fridayz?! Well, it's been a crazy month with moving the gallery and all... In any case, here's this week's Free Fridayz.
Next week's theme to get your drawings in for? Well, that would be NASAL ISSUES... My nose is acting up and I wanna see drawings explaining what the hell is wrong with it. Should be a grand Free Fridayz next week... But this week is down right funky as well. I mean, we have Haight St. One of the things our grand city is known for. Damn hippies peace signing it up and how the street has changed since the summer of love. All that's missing is a Crazy Shirts. Already have those crazy sexy legs.

We are so damn excited about moving FFDG next week that this week's Free Fridayz theme is: MOVIN' ON UP.
Many great entries this week. You wanna know a secret? It takes two to tango, and I never learned how to dance... Dance? May I have your hand for this second in time? But why you ask?... I don't know but when we were on our way home last night we ran into your sister and instead of going home we stayed out drinking. So today we are slow. Slow in the brain and I'm looking forward to getting a beer which I may in fact do at around 5 or so. In the meantime, I'm going to Caffe Trieste for another cup of coffee. A small half caffeinated one would work best. I don't wanna get all shaky AND I don't wanna have disturbed sleep tonight. Need to be fresh on Monday. We're moving the gallery on Tuesday and the week is going to be a busy one... See what just happened? Now we've come 360 and are back to my point... We're moving the gallery. UP? Well, the elevation is in fact UP and next door neighbor will be Upper Playground and their initials and U.P. Oh how apt for you? --> I need to urinate as well.

Catching air is something that only select few can fully comprehend. All those considering must be mindful of caution like feeble minded aspects to get your teeth caught in... Caught air? Catch air on your foot and try walking like that for a solid week... I bet that would be extremely difficult. Ever drop in on vert? The first time I did was in Ocean City, Maryland like in 1988 and I ate shit. In fact, my front foot never touched the board, but instead went right over the top and I proceeded to tumble down the ramp... and it was freakin' hot. They used to cook eggs on that thing on hot days. No joke. Metal vert ramp like 14 feet tall that would get hot enough to cook eggs on... The best part was that they older dudes who coached me to eat shit we're hyped that I went for it... It didn't hurt too bad in the end, and I gained the respect of the older skaters... Or I should say that I entertained them for 10 minutes in one horrific blow... As I got older I loved making the little ones drop in. Good laughs but you gotta pay your dues. You gotta prove that you have enough balls to go for it. CATCH AIR!

FFDG opened up the group show featuring original works by the artists of the world famous Skull & Sword tattoo last Friday here in San Francisco. Thanks to the huge crowd who turned out to support these four incredibly talented artists. Here is a taste of the show, and be sure to swing in to view in person. The show runs through June 8th.

| Gary Baseman Interview
Gary Baseman's retrospective "The Door is Always Open" at the Skirball in LA opened recently to massive crowds in a huge celebratory opening party. The exhibition is so complex and personal, delving into Baseman's background, family history, and all the layers of prolific work that he has done over the years. After the opening festivities winded down, I caught up with Baseman for an interview. We discussed the underlying meaning to some of the components of the show and how it felt for him, coming from such an honest personal perspective in putting this massive show together.

| Mark Mulroney at Ever Gold (+Photos)
Fertile Menace, a new show of Mark Mulroney's (NY) work opened at Ever Gold on May 4th and it's not one to be missed. It is intelligently hilarious, with jokes riffing off sex, Foucault, and the body, and while it makes you laugh it's also going to make you think.

Our buddies Jay Howell, Andreas Trolf, and Jim Dirschberger are hyped as their show, which they've been working on for like 2 years, premieres on Nickelodeon Saturday. |
| Michael Garlington & The Metaphysical Fundraiser at 111 Minna
Although I missed the opening of Northern-California photographer Michael Garlington's newest show, Constructed Realities, I was fortunate enough to see the work still up during the Metaphysical fundraiser a couple weeks back at 111 Minna. Metaphysical fundraiser, an auction to benefit Wayne Ernzer. --- The ghoulish photographs in their heavy, hand-made frames are reminiscent of photos from the old west, and the glass crucifixes, complete with fetuses and guns, emphasize the accumulated time within the works themselves. Whether you're looking at the frames, the photos, or both, this show deserves a visit, and a walk through the golden archway Garlington constructed around the front door.

| John Felix Arnold III in Japan (Part 3)
Fecal Face contributor Rachel Ralph (rachel(at)fecalface.com) has been profiling this Oakland based painter as he travels about Japan. In this segment, we feature some photos as he prepared for this show and residency at Spes-LaB in Tokyo which opened last weekend. Arnold will be featured in SFMoMA's Minna Street windows on June 8th.

| Alex Lukas & Richard Colman @Guerrero Gallery
Last Saturday, here in SF's Mission district, Guerrero Gallery opened two new shows with Philly based Alex Lukas and SF based Richard Colman respectively. Colman's work occupied the project space while Lukas' work and foliage was presented in the main space. Worth getting to if you haven't already.

| High 5s: Mexico-Land
Just got back to SF after a little trip south to Sayulita, Mexico. After 10 years without a vacation, me and the Mrs. headed south for some mental time off sitting in the sun, swimming and enjoying the watery Mexican beer. Here are some photos as we get back into the swing of things again.

| ARYZ at Fifty24SF
ARYZ (Spain) opened his newest gallery show at Fifty24SF last Friday and, if you live in the Bay Area, you need to go. This dude can obviously paint, and he doesn't need an entire building to show his impecable skill. The show has lots of small works on paper which contrast his highly-defined line work to his hard-edged painted objects. The contrast between the hard and soft was the most striking thing to me about his work, since I had never seen it in person before, and the washes blend with the thick paint seamlessly. The show also contains a larger work on canvas, a huge head suspended in the back of the room, and a big wood sculpture of a wolf figure. This diversity in such a small space was impressive, and those of us that went to the opening even got to meet the man in person. If you didn't make it out this weekend, check it out before May 31st when it closes and these works will be off to some very happy new homes.

This will be his first exhibition with the world renown Water McBeer Gallery highlighting his most recent achievements with paint and digital media. | Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.

After you view this one, view "Neighbour State" on his site. Both are visually enjoyable.

 |
| Recent Works by David Lyle
Working from found photographs, Lyle's paintings are created through a reductive painting process where each piece is rendered using only black paint and turpentine. Lyle begins this process by priming a panel with white gesso. He then paints a thin, rich, oily black veneer over the primed panel, slowly and systematically developing his images by removing some of the black paint with a cloth. In doing so, Lyle renders layer upon layer of various values of black paint resulting in his signature-style of luminescent works.
