Sylvia Ji weaves textiles into her beautiful Mexican death obsession...

"Never mind the mezcal, there's more than a bit of mescaline about the psychedelically tinged work of Los Angeles painter Sylvia Ji, which in her latest collection Interwoven continues previous meditations on the Mexican culture's compelling obsession with beauty and death through studies of women and textiles.

The Day of the Dead looms large in these macabre yet strangely attractive acrylic on wood paintings, but with Interwoven Ji has moved away from the traditional dress and colonial era ballgowns of her previous collections, introducing shawls and blankets as a distinct but organically enmeshed element. This series also sees more abstract work, with camouflaged skulls made of petals, leaves, birds and animals gently pushing out at the viewer from a nearly continuous background with the effect of an optical illusion, hinting at the decay in nature and the transience of beauty. FFDG is pleased to present Los Angeles based painter Sylvia Ji in her first solo show with FFDG entitled "Interwoven" featuring new acrylic paintings on wood inspired by Mexican textile and female figurative elements. A limited edition print will be released at the opening and Sylvia will be present for signing. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, July 12th (7-10pm). Beer and wine will be available. The show runs through August 10th.
For Sylvia Ji's new collection she's continued on her Day of the Dead narrative frequent in her paintings, while also expanding and incorporating traditional folk patterns in an effort to weave together the old and the new. These works are shaped by the illustrative aesthetic of mexican textiles, the intricate ornamentation of pottery and tile work, and a sensitivity to bold colors and harmonious symmetry. All works are acrylic on wood panels, evoking the fluid and organic elements represented to the viewer.
Ji's work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. Above all else, it is perhaps beauty that emerges as her defining characteristic, and her art reflects this: an extension of herself; a passionate appreciation of simple aesthetic pleasure fused with intimately complex subject matter.
Sylvia Ji was born in 1982, and raised in San Francisco, California, where she received her BFA at the Academy of Art University. Upon graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 where she currently resides. Ji's work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions including White Walls, Thinkspace, Lineage Gallery, BLVD Gallery, and Art Basel's Art Fair Now. She has been profiled in publications such as Juxtapoz, Trace, and Mesh Magazine, and her painting 'Dona Dolorosa' graced the cover of the LA Weekly.

On June 24th, 2011 I flew to Melbourne, Australia with artist Sylvia Ji for her first Australian exhibit.
For the past few years I've been working with a really amazing guy named Martin McIntosh, owner of Outre Galleries in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Sylvia and I, along with Martin, thought it would be cool to have a Pop-up Ji show at his gallery in Melbourne.
This is kind of a crazy post because after Sylvia's show I did an art/drinking tour of Australia.

We continue running short interviews with artists participating in FECAL FACE DOT COM 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY SHOW -- Opening Friday September 10th @The Luggage Store Gallery (6-8pm) with After party @Mezzanine (9-2am) featuring live musical performances by Kelley Stoltz, Sonny Smith, and Ty Segall - w/DJ Ted Shred.
Hot off the heals of her NYC solo show a month back, Sylvia Ji lives and works in LA and is soon off to Melbourne, Australia to speak at Semi-Permanent Sept 17th. Before she heads across the globe she'll be at the opening of the Fecal Face 10 Year Show, and you get to see her incredible works in person. If you see her at the after party @Mezzanine, buy her a drink. She's an amazing person and gifted artist, and we're very pleased that she's participating in our show.
What were you up to in the year 2000?
I was just entering the Academy of Art in SF, totally green behind the ears and ready to start a new chapter.
How has your work changed in the last 10 years?
10 years ago, I didn't know much about color, composition, mediums, pretty much all of it except that I loved to draw. I'm still learning, but my work has definitely evolved to become tighter in both technique and concept.
What did you think 2010 would be like back then?
2010 seemed like so far away back then, and now here it is, a decade later. Technology of course was going to be faster and smaller, but who would have thought smart phones and social networking would be so prevalent.

Went to NYC for Sylvia Ji's "Las Adelitas" show which was accompanied by Travis Louie's "Curious Myths" at Joshua Liner Gallery. We also made our way over to Last Rites to check out thier first group show. -Ryan Malley
As usual Sylvia brought her A-game and all who attended were trying to figure out what they needed to sell in order to walk away with one her dark beauties.

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...
I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.
It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

NYPD told to carry spray paint to cover graffiti

 NYC --- A new graffiti abatement program put forth by the police commissioner has beat cops carrying cans of spray paint to fill in and cover graffiti artists work in an effort to clean up the city --> Many cops are thinking it's a waste of resources, but we're waiting to see someone make a project of it. Maybe instructions for the cops on where to fill-in?
The NYPD is arming its cops with cans of spray paint and giving them art-class-style lessons to tackle the scourge of urban graffiti, The Post has learned.
Shootings are on the rise across the city, but the directive from Police Headquarters is to hunt down street art and cover it with black, red and white spray paint, sources said... READ ON

Fifty24SF opened Street Anatomy, a new solo show by Austrian artist Nychos a week ago last Friday night. He's been steadily filling our city with murals over the last year, with one downtown on Geary St. last summer, and new ones both in the Haight and in Oakland within the last few weeks, but it was really great to see his work up close and in such detail.

| AJ Fosik in Tokyo at The Hellion Gallery
Matt Wagner recently emailed over some photos from The Hellion Gallery in Tokyo, who recently put together a show with AJ Fosik (Portland) called Beast From a Foreign Land. The gallery gave twelve of Fosik's sculptures to twelve Japanese artists (including Hiro Kurata who is currently showing in our group show Salt the Skies) to paint, burn, or build upon.

| GOLD BLOOD, MAGIC WEIRDOS
Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne played host to a huge group exhibition a couple of weeks back, with "Gold Blood, Magic Weirdos" Curated by Melbourne artist Sean Morris. Gold Blood brought together 25 talented painters, illustrators and comic artists from Australia, the US, Singapore, England, France and Spain - and marked the end of the Magic Weirdos trilogy, following shows in Perth in 2012 and London in 2013.

| John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC
Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

| Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF
Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art
The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

| Sun Milk in Vienna
With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

Titled "How To Lose Yourself Completely (The September Issue)", it consists of a copy of the September 2007 issue of Vogue magazine (the issue they made the documentary about) with all faces masked with a sharpie, and everything else entirely whited out. 840 pages of fun. -Bryan Schnelle

| The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico
For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
