Mexican Street Graphics at Yerba Buena
Written by Trippe

They're rough Mexican sign painter images.
Sensacional! Mexican Street Graphics
@Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
Nov 18, 2006 – Mar 4, 2007

From the press release: "Sensacional! Mexican Street Graphics celebrates the vernacular design of the comic books, flyers, posters and signs common in Mexico, where a rough, idiosyncratic beauty arises from a mom-and-pop street economy. The artisans are the sign-painting, lithographic tradespeople who work off the high-art grid, and serve as de facto ad agencies for auto repair shops, food vendors, and wrestling events. Though these artists may not concern themselves with visual art trends, their work has enormous significance: in public environments increasingly monopolized by corporate controlled and mechanically produced imagery, these artists assert a brilliant graphic design presence that’s hand-made, individualistic, and defiantly human. Organized by Trilce Ediciones, an independent publishing house based in Mexico City."

Raced down there to see the show before it the opening was over and ran into Photographer, Stefan Simikich whose photos are featured in this past week's Photo of the Day.

Is that a hamburger Eyes or butt eyes back there on the wall?

Wasn't sure how these fit into the show. Seemed out of place. Maybe I should have read the plaque.

This is where they were showing Underplayed : A Mix -Tape of Music -Based Videos. We didn't check out any of the videos, but heard they were pretty sweet and worth watching. Going to have to come back through.

Mexico!

There's no tweety bird above, but that's one thing about Mexico. They love them some tweety bird and also anything Disney.

Love the band shots

The antihero cow.

They had little lightboxes to view slides of the art in its natural Mexican environment.

Really dug this sign tunnel.

sexy Mexico sign chicks

Hey, it's Dave Potes and his lovely lady friend, Tati.

Then the night ended out front where we stumbled upon a guy holding down some other guy while yelling for the cops. In about 5 minutes every cop in the city descended. There must have been 20 cop cars for this one incident... Guess the guy caught the dude trying to steal his motorcycle and hit the guy up with his helmet and then pinned him until the cops showed up... hate to say it, but it was more exciting that the show... I was raised as a gawker.

In the random information department, I'm listening to Michael Hurley right now. It's nice from time to time. {moscomment}

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD
Monday, 30 August 2010, 3:46pm

Opening up this Friday @Lumiere Theater on California @Polk here in SF and is also opening in Berkely as well. More dates and cities.

The meteoric rise and fall of Jean-Michel Basquiat, born 1960. In the crime-ridden NYC of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO. In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with “rock star status.” In 1985 he and Andy Warhol become close friends and painting collaborators, but they part ways and Warhol dies suddenly in 1987. Basquiat’s heroin addiction worsens, and he dies of an overdose in 1988. The artist was 25 years old at the height of his career, and today his canvases sell for more than a million dollars. With compassion and insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, an artist of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody.

Wanna thank NYC based painter David Lyle for sending us this fantastic print. David's paintings are inspired from found photographs.
