 maybe you've seen the new mural at 14th and Valencia and wondered, what's the deal with it. Is it an ongoing project? Who did it? Well, we passed by it the other day, did some investigation and found our friend Ert is behind it. She fills Fecal Face in.
There's a new mural in the Mission. Formerly Minneapolis-based artist Deuce 7 (a.k.a. Deuce Seven, Twenty Seven, 27) has relocated to the Bay Area and is helping out a pal while beautifying the neighborhood.
The current state
ClearChannel has an eye-level billboard on the side of an apartment building on 14th Street where it intersects with Valencia. The last time a billboard/banner graced that particular space was at the end of October 2009, when it was last seen crumpled in a heap on the street. Somebody took away old banner, but the billboard space was left blank... yes, a big huge blank slate; so inviting to street artists and graff writers.
I'm the manager of that building, and as such, it's my job to paint over the incessant tagging that happens on that area of my home and job. Over the past three months, I've spent countless hours painting over hastily scrawled graffwhich is no joy to me because I love a bit of street art, but if I don't paint over it, the owners of the building get a fine, which comes back on me. I could lose my job and apartment, so... I kind of have to partake in the endless back-and-forth of claiming that space.
Previously, I'd taken some spare paint I had and drew big head shapes on either side. One pink, one teal... they quickly became fodder for more tags. I'd hoped to be able to add to them when I had a chance, but I'm in school full-time right now, so I don't have a load of extra time on my hands.
When my friend from Minneapolis, Deuce 7, relocated to the West Coast, we met up for tea and took a look at the space. He said he'd be stoked to paint it, and since I've been a fan of his work for years, I was also stoked.
So far, he's spent four long days painting itthree of those days between rainstorms and sometimes even during. The police stopped by once, but I let them know it was all good. They drove away with their little moustached mouths still agape. There's a lot to take in. It's definitely worth seeing in person if you haven't already (even at night, there's a light on it). It's surely only a matter of time before ClearChannel puts up another billboard warning us that we have lupus or papertowels are on sale at Safeway, so get at it while you can.

On Feb 3rd joehuerta caught them in the act of painting it over. Well, it was nice while it lasted and, as of Feb 9th, it's blank again... soooo, as Ert said, who's next?

| Aloha Means So Many Things pt.2
I made a painting while I was in Hawaii that had a bunch of tiny little faces on it. It was a fine painting, but as I mentioned before, the people Pat put together on this trip were some of the most inspiring and awesome people I had ever met. I decided I needed to do something for everyone. So I borrowed a jig saw, cut up the painting into a bunch of small paintings and gave one to everyone that was staying at the RVCA houses with us.

| Ed Loftus Drawings
We've known the self taught artist Ed Loftus for many years dating back to the late 90s San Francisco skate scene where Ed was quite the ripper. He hails from jolly ol' England (now living in Oakland) and creates these incredible graphite drawings. These new works go further into a mind bending realism, and Ed has obviously increased his graphite skill immensely.

| Hola from Tequisquiapan Mexico
Hey there, I just got back from a short residency down in a small town two hours north of Mexico City called Tequisquiapan. I was asked to come down there to meet some of the crew of the Clipperton Project, which basically is going to be a crazy boat trip in March with scientists and artists going out to a very remote atoll in the Pacific called Clipperton Island. Anyways, I thought you might like to see some photos of the town and the graffiti that I was surprised to find there.

Before the show it was pretty much just me and Pacolli painting the whole gallery and doing all the instalations and hanging all the work. lots of shit to be done. I also painted the front of Choque the week after the opening. And we had a little concert at Choque in which I played keyboard and two other folks played guitar and sang. Ephameron went there the day before the opening and did a tape installation as well. During the month we also had a zine/print/shirt sale at Choque as well. It all went very well and we had a blast! -Mildred

Secrets of San Francisco

As part of building contracts with most large cities, contractors must include some public space into the design and construction of the building. Portland based photographer Corey Arnold is currently showing his commercial fishing photos at LA's Richard Heller Gallery. He showed at FFDG last year (pics).
We meant to post this before it opened, but dang it, got caught up and spaced it. In any case, be sure to view these in person. The show, Wolf Tide, is on display through March 31st.

Today's email -- A Chicago based Fecal Fan emailed letting us know they will be coming to San Francisco for a few days in mid March. The problem is he doesn't know how to spend his time, as he writes, any thoughts about what I should do and see (other galleries, gallery areas?), where I should eat, etc.?
Unfortunately, we have a short week this week and are completely too busy to help plan their trip. Any readers out there wanna help a fellow Fecal Fan/ art aficionado discover some rad parts of SF to enjoy? Read his words and leave a comment.

Shepard Fairey Pleads Guilty Over Obama ‘Hope’ Image

The street artist Shepard Fairey, whose “Hope” campaign poster of Barack Obama became an enduring symbol of his last presidential campaign, pleaded guilty Friday to a charge stemming from his misconduct in trying to bolster claims in a lawsuit over which photograph had been used as a basis for the poster.
Mr. Fairey, 42, sued The Associated Press in 2009 after it contended he had infringed on the copyright of one of its photographs in creating the poster. Mr. Fairey had claimed in his suit that he had used a different photograph of Mr. Obama, but later admitted that he had been mistaken and had tried to conceal his mistake, by destroying documents and fabricating others. ~read on
