I would probably ramble on uncomfortably about how difficult it is to describe... until their eyes glaze over, and then add that it's maybe better if they take a look for themselves.
Everything around me, my dreams, people I meet, I listen to a lot of music too, which definitely influences the shapes of my thoughts and hi-5's my imagination.
In terms of other artist work... a few names that come to mind right now... Julie Mehretu, Kandinsky, Miro, Remed, Pete Fowler, Caravaggio, Will Sweeny, Patrick Heron, Zedz, Kuniyoshi, Doze Green, Delta, Michael Andrews, Kyffin Williams, Pablo Palazuelo, Thierry Martin...but there's many many more.
Chofu burger.
If I'm in full painting mode it's generally all day and all night till I get tired, fall asleep... get up and do it again. I tend to work quite slowly building things up in layers, letting it take shape at its own pace, plus I'm usually working on a fairly large scale, so I really need to use my time effectively. Music is crucial to the process, it's my main supply of inspiration and energy. The work is pretty much fuelled by beats... and tea.
This year I've been lucky enough so far to get by mainly selling work, painting commissions and the odd bit of illustration. But in the past I've had to take on plenty of random part-time jobs to make ends meet... something tells me these days aren't over yet, but it's all good.
My process is generally changing/evolving with each new body of work, I guess like most artists. I try to do as much drawing/painting as I can with no plan or pre-sketching... just straight out the hand, not thinking or self concious in any way, just taking it as it comes and letting it grow in its own way. But also sometimes it becomes a much longer development process... I might get a clear feeling for a composition that I want to explore, so I start building up these drawings & sketches, scanning them, messing around with layers and scale and stuff, printing it out, messing with it etc... sometimes that goes on and on in a cycle, building up layers until it grows into something resembling that original feeling. I guess i just try to follow what feels right at the time, and accept that it could (and probably will) all change at any moment.
biro's, pencil's, sharpies..laptop (photoshop), printer, scanner & a trusty old lightbox..paint-wise I've always got on best with oils.
I know it doesn't sound that exciting but I just managed to sort out a new studio space for the winter. I've been working in my bro's garage up to now, which I'm massively grateful for, but I'm pretty excited at the thought of having a bit more space and light to grow work in.
Probably get one of these... and maybe I'd try and fix this.
Catch up on some sweet dreaming.
Bournemouth's cool man, I got a real soft spot for this area. Its not the most exciting, action packed place in the world but we've got the sea on our doorstep... and in a short drive you can either be in London for some dirty madness or deep into beautiful coastal countryside. It's a good balance.
Too much shit out there already.
I'll have to keep you posted on the next show, bit too early to say... but I'm heading over to France for a little project. Just had a show recently at The Outsiders back in July/Aug... Will hopefully keep the momentum going from that with another show soon...until then I'll be back in the studio working on the master plan.
