Words are tricky, I'm never sure about how to describe my work. I actually kinda suck at that.. Well, I think there are both psychedelic and gothic vibes to it. It is colourful and filled up with dark figures. People often find it mystical, poetic and mysterious. There is obviously a certain feeling that refers to magic, tales, some kind of twisted romanticism maybe.. Recently I've been trying to work on less narrative compositions, focusing a little more on pure shapes and patterns.
All done with paper cutouts. It's easy to look at and think illustrator or something, but no, these are all hand done and done very well. -Fecal Face.
Black Sabbath, French director Philippe Garrel, Pre-Raphaelites, Edgar Allan Poe, Edvard Munch, haunted houses, Kenneth Anger, weird psychedelic shit, Gerhard Richter, Maya Deren, Symbolists, Only Theater Of Pain by Christian Death, Jean Rollin movies, Alice Cooper, 60's hippie art and music posters, Ash Ra Tempel, Sol LeWitt.
Totally tofu, I'm a vegetarian.
There is no routine really.. Every day is new and different. I usually wake up early and enjoy starting to think and work in the morning. Some days I don't feel like working on a piece and I play music instead, or read and watch movies. The process of making art is so great, I love being totally alone, and start a new piece, listening to a good old Stones album or Gram Parsons, smoking cigarettes.. There is some kind of a teenage feeling of freedom to it, that I think is definitely awesome.
I feel super lucky that I'm sort of able to pay my bills making art full-time, even though some months can be really difficult...
It depends of my mood and also the project. Sometimes I have very clear visions of compositions in my head, that work right away, and sometimes it's just an atmosphere or a concept I'd like to explore- then I have lots of white sheets of paper and I try many different sketches, until something interesting finally comes up. When I work with papercuts, usually I need to have a very precise sketch or idea before I get started, since it is a difficult and slow technique, that allows you less freedom and lightness than a pen or a brush. Drawing is really more instinctive.
Scissors and colour paper. Glue. Flashe paint and brushes. Ink. Old books and magazines. Super 8.
I just discovered the work of photographer Alison Scarpulla, that I think is amazingly beautiful and stunning. This is totally the kind of pictures I'd love to take if I was a photographer. It's such a great feeling to stumble upon art that is super exciting and special, that you can connect with right away. It actually doesn't happen to me that often.
I buy myself a '62 Gibson SG guitar, a Cocteau drawing and an apartment in Rome. Keep what's left to enjoy a little.
-In bed watching movies. Going to some exhibition on a sunny day. Read tarot cards to myself. Looking for whatever at a flea market. Get together with people. Internet. You know, the common things. I never know what to do with my time off actually. I can feel a little lost and anxious when I'm not focusing on something particular.
There is this typical thing in Paris, when you spend a whole afternoon at a café just smoking and talking about whatever, you know like in a 60's Nouvelle Vague movie. This is still something people like to do over here. I think it's funny. The city looks very beautiful to me, and it really makes up for all the negative aspects of it. Paris is actually a great city to hang out and kill time with your friends, but where i feel like it's hard to do things somehow. It's just some energy thing..
I'm easily pissed off and there are lots of things that can get on my nerves. Last time I was watching a show on TV where famous french actors and actresses were talking about their job and cinema in general, all saying how hard and painful a job it is. Like they have to look inside themselves and that's apparently excruciating or something, and that it's hard being famous. I thought it was totally indecent and stupid.
I'll have two shows in Tokyo in September and October. I'd be really excited to have a new show in the US soon.. Right now I'm working on new series of papercuts and scrapbook collages, and I'm thinking of a new short film I'd like to shoot in a few months. I also planned to record more music during the summer.
