Beautiful time lapse from the International Space Station. Check the lighting flashes & Aurora Borealis. Amazing video

Time lapse sequences of photographs taken by the crew of expeditions 28 & 29 onboard the International Space Station from August to October, 2011, who to my knowledge shot these pictures at an altitude of around 350 km. All credit goes to them.

HD, refurbished, smoothed, retimed, denoised, deflickered, cut, etc. All in all I tried to keep the looks of the material as original as possible, avoided adjusting the colors and the like, since in my opinion the original footage itself already has an almost surreal and aestethical visual nature.

Aloha Means So Many Things pt.2
Written by Kelsey Brookes
Tuesday, 20 December 2011, 10:33am

I made a painting while I was in Hawaii that had a bunch of tiny little faces on it. It was a fine painting, but as I mentioned before, the people Pat put together on this trip were some of the most inspiring and awesome people I had ever met. I decided I needed to do something for everyone. So I borrowed a jig saw, cut up the painting into a bunch of small paintings and gave one to everyone that was staying at the RVCA houses with us. -Kelsey Brookes

Aloha Means So Many Things pt.1
Written by Kelsey Brookes

RVCA got 4 houses on the North Shore this year and packed them with an eclectic mix of talented people. They asked me if I wanted to go (I do not know how I got included), I did and below is what happened.

Hawaii, it seems like such a simple place. Simplicity is there to be had if you want it but hawaii is not a simple. Hawaii has a little bit of Hollywood some Miami, a bit of Brazil, a lot of Australia and a dash of New York all wrapped up with waves, coconut trees and pineapple bushes. Hawaii is a dynamic and as we will soon see a bizarre place. -Kelsey Brookes

Real Etheral by Evan Mann
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 08 December 2011, 3:53pm

Real Ethereal embraces our mysterious relationship with life. It blends the physical with the metaphysical on a journey through an ever-transitioning space where common interactions become extraordinary and perception ventures into the otherworldly. Real Ethereal examines possibilities of unseen realities and metaphorically represents the winding path that reveals before us and conceals behind us; the future remains a mystery while the past fades quickly into the recesses of our mind. We are left with the present: the mysterious reality of our existence; the hair of time difficult to grasp.

Joyce Ho - Mini Interview
Written by Kid Yellow
Tuesday, 15 November 2011, 8:52am

Who are you and what do you?

I am an interdisciplinary artist with an emphasis in painting, sculpture and theater.

Location? Age? Education? Website?

I moved to the United States from Taiwan when I was 14. This experience of being transplanted from my home, family, and culture had a huge impact on me and my works. After receiving my M.A. in studio arts from University of Iowa, I went back to Taiwan for my solo exhibition and a few set design projects. I plan to move back to the states in 2012.

www.joycehostudio.com, www.joyceho-art.blogspot.com

How would you describe your work to someone?

The images that I paint all have some disturbing quality, whether it's the angle of the character's head or the awkwardness of the distorted bodies. But in order to complicate these unsettling images, I use strong yellow hues to create a warm overall lighting that emanates throughout the entire space. I like this idea of “peaceful violence,†of seducing the viewer with bright colours, while simultaneously confronting them with the damaged characters.

Describe your process for creating new work.

I normally spend a few months developing a series of images and then over the course of an evening take a number of photographs and experiment with different compositions and lighting. For my works in my house, I usually choose rooms with more angular architecture and multiple lighting sources. There is something cold and inhuman about many of the new high rise apartments in Taipei, with their cold, reflective marble floors, fluorescent lights, and long corridors. These apartments seem more like conference rooms or hotels.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?

I usually work at night. ( late, late night ). I like listening to music when I work, but I always forget to turn it on.

Jeff Soto: Goodbye, Old Studio
Written by Jeff Soto
Wednesday, 26 October 2011, 11:00am

In October 2005, just a few months after we had our first daughter, I leased an industrial space near our small apartment. It was a pretty big decision for Jennifer and I, it was another bill (several) and another responsibility for us- already under pressure with a two month old baby!

It ended up being the right move- I'd been working on our kitchen table or driving across town to work in my parent's garage. We had moved into a two room apartment but there was still no room to work. I found a nice 1000 sq/ft industrial warehouse type shop with a small office in front. I got the idea from seeing the Clayton Brother's studio a few years before. The place was big enough, versatile and had plenty of storage space, with large walls, a roll up door and high ceilings. It was perfect, and I got right to work.

I'm a little sad to leave when I look back at all the exhibits and paintings I worked on at this space, not to mention how my life has changed the past six years. It's been a pretty cool/strange/awesomely/fucked up/rad six years!

Now I've moved into a great new space with friends. The new studio has everything the old one has with more support and camaraderie. Gonna be a new adventure and I'm hoping to get many years of great work accomplished here. But I'll keep in my heart my little studio which helped me get off the ground!!

Here's some pictures over the years....

Everyone's version of Sexy is obviously different. Maybe you're into latex, big muscles, thigh highs, shaved heads, big/ small/ inbetween, intelligence, humor, we all have certain things that turn us on both physically and mentally. For Peekaso it's a overflowing plate of bacon.

Sexy facts?:

*In Hong Kong, adulterous husbands get more than a steep monthly alimony payment – a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her husband if he cheats on her – but she may only do so with her bare hands.

*Semen contains zinc and calcium, both of which are proven to prevent tooth decay.

*Hitler and Napoleon both had only one testicle.

*Average number of times a man will ejaculate in his lifetime: 7,200

Tom Betthauser, I draw, paint etc.

Untitled Land, 2011, 48"x60" graphite on paper

Location? Age? Education? Website?

I'm 24, I was born and raised in the bay area, where I graduated from the indomitable San Francisco Art Institute in 2010. Currently I live in New Haven Connecticut where I'm wrapping up my MFA at Yale. (www.TomBetthauser.com)

How would you describe your work to someone?

Right now I just say that I make landscapes. It's vague, but I like the way it makes people (including myself) interact with the work, and it leaves me with a lot of room to explore the core of what I'm interested in.

Describe your process for creating new work.

I like the idea of creating a world from the ground up. I start very abstractly, with large areas of dark and light, and then try to pull a blank landscape out of that. Once that's built I'm free to explore and add elements of content as necessary.

High 5s: You're Like the Clouds in the Sky
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 13 October 2011, 11:00am

Had a crazy ass summer/ fall. The building our new apartment is now for sale. My wife is getting surgery to get a tumor taken out of her head/ neck. The building FFDG was in caught fire and it remains unclear how long till it's repaired... No worries though. FFDG has a temporary home. We have health insurance and business insurance (insurance is a good thing). SF is experiencing summer, finally. My cat is fluffy. The Fecal Face softball team is playing better (our record is 0-8). The Tigers are still in it (barely). The Mario Martinez (Mars-1) show opening Nov 10th at FFDG is still on track (note: it'll be at the temp space- 248 Clement). Got our taxes done in time. The art season is back on with lots of great shows to check out here in San Francisco and many more to enjoy online...

Random facts: When you die your hair still grows for a couple of months. - The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building. - A skunk's smell can be detected by a human a mile away. - When snakes are born with two heads, they fight each other for food. - Charlie Brown's father was a barber. - Cats can hear ultrasound.

Fire at Fecal Face/ FFDG
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 29 September 2011, 1:46pm

On Tuesday at around 4pm we were working away on the site/ answering emails when a crazed lady pounds on our door and yells, "the building is on fire. Get out!". Unfortunately, this is the second time we've heard this yelled at us while working at Fecal Face.

Thinking it was going to be another similar grab a few things, stand back while the SFFD do their thing, and in 30 minutes, we're back inside and back to work. Not this time. Not this time at all. We're out of the gallery and space there at 248 Fillmore for who knows how long till we're back in our beloved space next to our friends at Estela's and Three Twins.

Me on NBC channel 11 news Tuesday night. I was also on KTVU as well.

Anyone got a empty store front we can rent till ours in back and running? Please feel free to let us know: john(at)fecalface.com

Thinking we were possibly over reacting, we grad Damon Soule's paintings from the gallery walls and quickly try to figure out where we can take them as screaming fire trucks race to the scene. Luckily, our friend Mike Midden lives across the street and let us store the paintings there while we figure things out... Weird bangs and explosions above our heads/ breaking glass around us, we frantically grabbed art, laptops, cameras, etc.

Flames were shooting 6 feet out the corner apartment's window. Distant/ nearby sirens continued to descend to our corner of Haight and Fillmore. At one point, it became clear there was no going back inside as firemen broke down the door next to ours that leads to the stairway. A healthy crowd builds behind the yellow caution tape. We stand nervously watching the fire rage and build. Thick black smoke billows from the roof as the late afternoon breeze begins sweeping the flames across the building from one side to the next.

Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

Watching the flames lick the next building over, we hope that the massive amounts of water would somehow filter away from our ceilings as gallons and gallons of toxic fire water make their way down from the top floors.

After holding our breath for 30 minutes, we know there's nothing we can do but fret. It's determined that a strong beer is needed to calm frayed nerves. We had beers at Cafe Soleil where next to us sat a resident of the building also calming his nerves with a beer. We chat and hope that the fire/ smoke/ water damage escaped our places. It wasn't the case, at least for us.

Tip toeing around a web of fire hoses we avoid the raining water and enter the gallery where a rush of heat and smoke stink past our noses. Water is poring down in umpteen places from the ceiling as we trek across a foot of water on the floor in search for items/ art that may still be safe. Our cabinet contents were dry. Travis Millard's and Mel Kadel's work, which was probably in the only part of the back area that avoided water, was untouched, thank God (we built those shelves where the work sat just a month ago saving us from having to claim their art as a loss).

Thanks to Harley and everyone at Upper Playground and neighbors who formed a human chain to move items and art from the drenched gallery to Upper Playground's back room. A lot was saved and items that were ruined by the water damage can be replaced. Our disappointment by having to work from home is nothing compared to those who not only lost their apartments but their personal items as well. Thankfully no one was injured.. Animals were rescued and all will move on. We just hope that the contractors are building ninjas so we can get back in soon and we can get back to hosting shows.

Hopefully we're going to back in 248 Fillmore very soon... Anyone got a empty store front we can rent till ours in back and running? Please feel free to let us know: john(at)fecalface.com Thankfully we purchased a good insurance plan when we moved in which covers fire damage like this. SO glad we kept up with the payments.

That night My and Adam took our gallery plant Stretch home while the dust settles.

Back in the next day to see what was lost.

Natty and Jessica taking inventory.

More on the bummer here.

Anne Wolk - Mini Interview
Written by Trippe
Wednesday, 28 September 2011, 8:00am

Location? Age? Education? Website?

Berlin, 28, MFA Fine Arts, www.annewoelk.de

How would you describe your work to someone?

I am a contemporary figurative painter, who creates mixed-media paintings with a penchant for bright colors, geometric shapes, and street-art forms. My work explores the relationship between cultural plurality and a recycling of pop-culture, by layering different motifs from Science Fiction film stills and quotations from an art historical background, like Symbolism and color-field paintings. Overall I am constantly studying the possibilities of oil paint as a medium and trying to push my boundaries.

Influences?

I appreciate the work of Kai Althoff, Corinne Wasmuht, Daniel Richter, David Hockney, Franz West, Gerhard Richter, Pierre Soulages, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko.

Cheese burgers or tofu burgers?

I always get two with cheese.

Favorite place traveled?

In the summer of 2009 I undertook a journey by car for several weeks along the French and Spanish-Atlantic coast with stops in Paris, Bordeaux, Vieux-Boucau, Biarritz, San Sebastian and Bilbao. I enjoyed myself immensely.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?

Sometimes I like the sound and the noise of the studio building with its different characters, but usually I love to listen to: audio books, The Cure, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Costello, Erykah Badu, The Fugees, Faith No More, Jeff Buckley, Amy Winehouse, John Lennon, and Lassie Singers, (among others). Honestly I have no real daily routine, I paint when I am hot for my work. Late in the evening is the best time to concentrate. During the nighttime I get ready for new things and I have my best ideas.

Vans recently sent me down to NY to meet up and check out the September 10th Supply and Demand show - featuring works and a collaborative installation by Chris Yormick, Rich Jacobs, Russ Pope and Jay Howell - at the House of Vans.

I was super excited to check out New York (my first time) as well as see what these creative dudes were up too! This unique show in a 20,000 square foot warehouse also featured food trucks, Juxtapoz magazines, a DJ, a gallery space, and an upstair bowl to skate. My head finally stopped reeling this week. Beyond the Surface by Egor Kraft
Written by Trippe
Wednesday, 14 September 2011, 11:00am

The video is a visual metaphor of existential freedom, predominance of essence over existence, and conditionality of boundaries it also has a sculptural dimension related to the evolution of form. The space as a black absolute presented as an allegory of authentic freedom as well as the narrative links to the discourse of how the consciousness and existence are related to each other.

Egor Kraft is, 24 years, young artist, illustrator and designer, currently based Moscow. Since 2002 he started his career, working as a freelancer on editorial illustrations, graphic designs & murals.

Sylvia Ji in Melbourne - R. Malley Blogging
Written by Ryan Malley
Tuesday, 13 September 2011, 2:00pm

I'm Ryan Malley owner of 827INK.com. On June 24th, 2011 I flew to Melbourne, Australia with artist Sylvia Ji for her first Australian exhibit. For the past few years I've been working with a really amazing guy named Martin McIntosh, owner of Outre Galleries in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Sylvia and I, along with Martin, thought it would be cool to have a Pop-up Ji show at his gallery in Melbourne. This is kind of a crazy post because after Sylvia's show I did an art/drinking tour of Australia.

Fish Orchestra
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 01 September 2011, 11:00am

Quintetto is an installation based on the study of casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds. The basic concept is to reveal what we call "invisible concerts" of everyday life. The vertical movements of the 5 fishes in the aquarius is captured by a videocamera, that translates (through a computer software) their movements in digital sound signals.

We'll have 5 different musical instruments creating a totally unexpected live concert.

High 5s: Testing Our Water
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 25 August 2011, 8:00am

Get on your lab coats because we're about to get all Mr. Wizard up here at Fecal Face... Well, sort of. Mr. Wizard was way more entertaining than a water test blog.

If you live in San Francisco you most likely live and work in a pretty old building with absolutely no knowledge of its plumbing. If you're also like us you drink the tap water because, all those plastic water bottles are a complete waste and, we here in San Francisco have some of the nation's best water... But is it? I mean we use a Brita here @FFDG, but shit, we have no idea if the pipes contain lead or something. After we started getting some headaches, we thought it might be a good idea to buy a little kit and test the water. ~exciting conclusion.

The last blog from our glorious trip to Brazil features the last few days spent at the beach.

Many thanks to Carmo Marchetti, one of the owners of Sao Paulo's Logo Gallery, for letting us stay at her beach home. We planned on busing up the coast to stay at some resort which would have sucked as the buses are super slow. Instead, thanks to Carmo's generosity, we could afford to rent a car and got a place with tennis courts, wet and dry saunas, a garage filled with all sizes of surfboards, a kayak, a heated swimming pool plus a private beach. Thanks again, Carmo! You helped to make our last few days in Brazil glorious ones!

Free Fridayz: Total Vacation Mode
Written by Trippe
Friday, 12 August 2011, 4:15pm

Everyone's on vacation. You're most likely checking Fecal Face from your IPad on a beach in the middle of the Bahamas sipping on a drink that has an umbrella sticking out of it while crabs nibble at your toes. Is it warm and beautiful? Are there tropical birds shitting on your shoulder? I wouldn't know.

We walk up and down Haight Street every day coming and going from Fecal Face. It's so easy to spot the tourists with their maps out, cameras hanging on their chests casually strolling up to Haight and Ashbury. On those beautiful crisp mornings, they make me wish I was in total vacation mode. I would buy them a crepe and an ice cream sandwich in appreciation.

Dirty Beaches & Spotify
Written by Trippe
Saturday, 16 July 2011, 8:00am

Aaaaaa, have you tried Spotify yet? We love it here at Fecal Face and have been discovering new music like the one man band, Dirty Beaches, here. Having a limited library of music/ listening to the same old shit was getting very annoying. Spotify, so far, has been a miracle in discovering new music. Also, pretty great that it ties into social networks as well making a breeze to share music you're into with friends... Ok, enough with the free Spotify ad, but for real. Great great great.

We signed up for the premium Spotify account ($10/ month) and you can play music through your phone and can even listen to something like 3,500 songs in offline mode... meaning that you can have your phone on airplane mode (no wifi or phone service/ i.e., an airplane flight) and have up to like 3,500 songs on your phone to listen to... Love this thing! The future in music loving.

If you're into Spotify, you can click here at listen to the tunes we're jammin' here at Fecal Face.

Winnie Truong - Mini Interview
Written by Trippe
Monday, 27 June 2011, 2:38pm

Location? Age? Education? Website?

Toronto, 22, BFA in drawing and painting, www.winnietruong.com

How would you describe your work to someone?

I usually tell them that I make really big drawings of hairy faces where hair becomes an unnatural extension of personality and whim of the subject. The work is about challenging those heavily coded ideas about the beautiful and the grotesque that exist in our culture. However, I find it’s much easier to just show them on my iPhone.

Influences?

Right now I’m reading a lot of John Wyndham, H.G. Wells, Charles Burns, and revisiting the X-Files.

Cheese burgers or tofu burgers?

Double cheese burgers.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?

Most days I tend to wake up late, take shamefully long showers followed by making myself a hot breakfast. I ride my bike to my studio while running errands along the way. I’m usually in studio from early afternoon and into the night. While I enjoy the musical stylings of everything from Destroyer to the best of DMX, I prefer playing television shows on my laptop. Right now I’m in a three-way affair between Farscape, The Wire and Six Feet Under.

How do you pay the bills?

Art and abject frugality.

Tools of the trade?

A good supply of pencil crayons, sharpeners, erasers, painter’s tape, paper towel, and my laptop.

What are you really excited about right now?

Thinking about new things, and making new drawings for my next solo show in Toronto this September.

New York 4 New York - With support from the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media's principal, one of the four high schools on the Canarsie Educational Campus ( formerly Canarsie High School), The Love Movement invited 15 renowned New York City artists to create murals for a permanent installation in the high school's hallways. Beyond beautification, the aim of the murals is to provide a positive, inspiring and empowering learning environment with artwork that can relate to the students. The project is a blueprint for schools to utilize local artists to help enrich their educational environments now and in the future.

Exploring the Bay Area by bike and ferry.

Last Friday we were trying to plan our post work plans that wouldn't cost too much $$ and also involve moving about on the ol' bicycle. Some water time in there would be a bonus. So we checked the ferry schedule and planned our attack which was ferry to the closed Naval Air Station in Alameda, bike around the sprawling empty base for an hour while enjoying two buck chuck along the way. Total cost per person was $12. Two buck chuck included, throw another dollar in the pot.

Free Fridayz: Friggen Fraggen
Written by Ashley Taylor
Friday, 17 June 2011, 4:22pm
I think it would be a great time to publicly thank Ashley Taylor who puts together Free Fridayz here at Fecal Face every week. Not only does she do that, but she also has spent a serious amount of Saturdays gallery sitting at the old Gough St. space while we played in the sunshine.

Friggen Fraggen theme submitted by Travis Gillan (Denver, CO).
What you should know about Ashley is that she takes wonderful photos. Check her site and see for yourself: 4blankwalls.com

So how about a short rant unrelated to how rad Ashley is. In fact, the rant will have nothing to do with Ashley at all. It'll just be written under the public thank you and your photos are rad words I wrote above. Maybe it would be best if I started a new paragraph to visually separate as well.

Did you know that The Animal Control and Welfare Commission here in San Francisco recommends that the city ban the sale of tropical fish and gold fish?.

Have you ever eaten a gold fish? I ate 3 in one night (I need to dig up the footage). 4 other Howard House residents downed the lil' guys too. This is no rant. It's a silly state of fact.

If you must, don't chew. Best with a large glass of water. -Trippe

Your SF Photos

Last week we did our first themed Photo of the Day asking you to email in your quintessential San Francisco photos. We got so many great entries and couldn't squeeze them all in. So, here's a bit of overflow from the images emailed in.

Hola from Tequisquiapan Mexico

Hey there, I just got back from a short residency down in a small town two hours north of Mexico City called Tequisquiapan. I was asked to come down there to meet some of the crew of the Clipperton Project, which basically is going to be a crazy boat trip in March with scientists and artists going out to a very remote atoll in the Pacific called Clipperton Island. Anyways, I thought you might like to see some photos of the town and the graffiti that I was surprised to find there.

FFDG's Permanent Home

We can finally shut up about FFDG's fire, about FFDG's temp space, about all the transitions, because we signed a 2 year lease on a new space in the heart of the Mission District last night!

Real Etheral by Evan Mann

Real Ethereal embraces our mysterious relationship with life. It blends the physical with the metaphysical on a journey through an ever-transitioning space where common interactions become extraordinary and perception ventures into the otherworldly. Real Ethereal examines possibilities of unseen realities and metaphorically represents the winding path that reveals before us and conceals behind us; the future remains a mystery while the past fades quickly into the recesses of our mind. We are left with the present: the mysterious reality of our existence; the hair of time difficult to grasp.

Dream Team in Sao Paulo - Part 2

Before the show it was pretty much just me and Pacolli painting the whole gallery and doing all the instalations and hanging all the work. lots of shit to be done. I also painted the front of Choque the week after the opening. And we had a little concert at Choque in which I played keyboard and two other folks played guitar and sang. Ephameron went there the day before the opening and did a tape installation as well. During the month we also had a zine/print/shirt sale at Choque as well. It all went very well and we had a blast! -Mildred
