press release

"Fecal Face's Chicago correspondent, Ryan Christian, heads west with a talent pool plucked from all over the map — New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, and LA — with each of the 11 artists lighting out for imaginative territories. Amy Mayfield's bright-hued paint-pours on canvas resemble psychedelic aquariums, while storms brew beneath the nervous, wispy lines of Erin Morrison's nature drawings. Mike Rea carves large-scale wooden space modules and suited astronauts rich in fantastic detail. These artists, their westward expansion notwithstanding, are definitely on the way to somewhere promising." -Flavorpill

Fecal Face Dot Gallery, an extension of the popular San Francisco-based art and culture website Fecalface.com, is pleased to announce the opening of West, Wester, Westest, the first guest-curated show since the gallery's opening last February. Following the success of multiple artist interviews and features, Fecal Face has invited its Chicago contributor Ryan Christian, to bring his curatorial eye to San Francisco. With artists hailing from New York to California and many places in-between, West, Wester. Westest, provides a unique sampling of some of the finest talents from across the U.S. "I'm not trying to group work that has a conceptual dialogue amongst its pieces." says Christian, "Rather, I'm bringing a selection of artists to San Francisco who you would not normally see in the region. Every artist included in this exhibition brings something valuable to our current visual culture."

Acclaimed artists: Eric Lebofsky (Chicago), Frank Magnotta (Brooklyn), Josh Mannis (Los Angeles), Amy Mayfield (Chicago), Erin Morrison (Seattle), Alexander Kvares (Atlanta), Tom Long (NYC), Scott Anderson (Chicago), Mike Rea (Chicago), Casey Jex Smith (California) and Geoffrey Todd Smith (Chicago). Displaying paintings, sculpture, illustration, and mixed media installation, these artists share a common enthusiasm for the potential of subject matter. From landscape, to portraiture, abstraction, and psychedelia, each contribute an important dialogue with contemporary art practices and represent and exciting and innovative new direction in art. West, Wester, Westest is bourn from the spirit of going somewhere new and showing something different.

West, Wester, Westest is the first of several shows scheduled along the west coast curated by Ryan Christian. He has worked with Chicago-based Western Exhibitions for the last three years and is currently collaborating with like minded curators to create a curatorial based collective focusing on upcoming, ambitious, and mid-career talent.
