Los Angeles based artist Derek Albeck’s recent solo show at POVevolving Gallery in LA’s Chinatown entitled, “Mysterious Strangers” is that of nostalgia and personal history. Known for his photorealistic graphite drawings and flannel mask installations, Albeck’s representations are flawless. His use of mirrors, both broken and whole, are there to add an entirely different world of color, and a sense of identity, to his otherwise black and white pieces. The stories behind them add even more.

Several of the characters displayed in “Mysterious Strangers” are just that, relatives in Albeck’s life that he barely knew. “The narrative aspect of the work is romantic, in a sense, because I’m trying to re-appropriate these things that happened in my life. For me, it’s all about forming an identity, recreating these pasts to make sense of the present,” says Albeck.

Oakland based Monica Canilao's nostalgia based site-specific installation featuring donated and scavenged materials including stained paper, discarded fabric, even tea bags and bones. The show features modified antique parlor portraits enshrined in collections of natural and human-made objects Canilao scavenged locally from Milwaukee’s forgotten places.

Monica & Harrison spent 100 hours in 4.5 days installing the "What's Lost Is Safe" exhibit at Sky High Gallery in Milwaukee. The show opened on May 6th and after a few days of unwinding & exploring our city they hightailed in a van packed with leftover materials to Detroit to work on their house the Treasure Nest. Aaron and I drove out there last Thursday to help build & explore Detroit a bit. [photos] -Faythe Levine

We are pleased to present Niall McClelland’s first solo show with the gallery. The exhibition will contain all new works including the Tapestries, Skins and Stains for which he has begun to gather critical interest in Canada and the United States. McClelland was included, along with Jeremy Jansen, Ellsworth Kelly and Richard Serra, in the group show Black To Back And Light at CR in 2009. Of that exhibition the Globe and Mail surmised that “..the works of Jansen and McClelland are plenty gritty enough to hold up against the Serras and the Kelly. Indeed they demonstrate the same kind of uncompromising bravura.” McClelland (b.1980) grew up in Toronto, spent many of his summers in Northern Ireland, went to school in Vancouver and eight years later returned to Toronto where he now lives.

I flew to Brazil to instal the show in march, had some help from my friends and we managed to do everything on time, hang out with my family, screen print a bunch of shirts in my mom's living room, a workshop at the gallery, art sale or more like a shirts, prints and zines kinda sale with concerts at my friends house. pretty good times! oh yeah, the show goes until May 21st! -Pacolli

Hey, it was the first show we were able to make it out to in some time and we picked a very enjoyable one. This Irish 30 year old draws everyday things that surround him in the small Irish town he lives in (population of 50). When he's not drawing these things as seen in this show, he works on illustrations for a range of publications. He also wears large rimmed glasses and plans on taking Amtrack across the United States before flying back to Ireland via NYC. This is his first visit to the US.

Nigel holds an MARCH from the University of Edinburgh and received a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Silver Medal commendation for his architectural thesis exploring borderlands in Istanbul in 2005. His new book In the Wilds is also available at Needles and Pens.

Better late than never. We have a lot of content that we're a bit behind with as we play ctach up here at Fecal Face. Keep checking back as we add mucho art-ness. ----> Check a studio visit we did with Mike back in '08... Shit, that was 3 years ago?! Oh how time flies when you're having artistical fun.
