One of the greatest and worst things about our country is the car. The freedom it has given the average citizen is unparalleled. We can freely move about the country whenever we want without the tethers of using mass transit. Never before has anything opened up the local geography like the motor vehicle. Never before has the price been so high for that freedom. Our world is on a strange and dangerous course at the moment, all for the joys of mobility.

LA is a place built to insure your dependence on the car. You can't get anywhere without one. A recent trip to LA coincided with the Hamburger Eyes Magazine show at the Turntable Lab, Hamburger City. As has been said before about this show, it was as if the magazine exploded on the walls. A good portion of the content of the show was in the most recent issue with some new additions and photos from the last issue. Seeing is believing and I sure as shit believe that the show was awesome. It was great to see rare moments of life captured for our enjoyment and reaction. My only complaint was the lack of frames. The quality of the work demanded quality presentation. If you are in the LA area it is worth the drive to check it out. - Isaac Randozzi

Due to the crowd the photos aren't the greatest, sorry about that. The place was packed full of Los Angelinos, from the photo fan to rapper The Game came. And unlike some SF events, people were very interested in what was on the walls. Dave and Ray were stoked on the turnout and the fact that some photos sold. I saw more sales dots on the wall than I've seen in a photo show in a long time. Nice one! For LA having a reputation of being a kind of stuck-up town, this opening was far from that. Everyone was mellow, nice and inviting. People at the show looked at the photos, drank beer, conversed and caroused, and generally made merry during what felt like the first night of summer. In fact some of the women were very inviting. But due to prior obligations (being in love with a wonderful woman for one), I had to decline the very tempting invitation.

Later that night I ran into just about the entire So. Cal. contingency of the SPBs.

The sonic division of Hamburger Eyes played some great tunes along with another DJ, I didn't get her name.

Photography and visual arts run strong in these brothers, brothers Ako and Atiba Jefferson and Ray and David Potes.

The next day, I got an offer to check out the Watts Towers from Edith Abeyta. The purpose of my LA trip was to help Porous Walker install his art for the Doing the Back Stroke in the Lake of Fire show and Edith was the curator.

The guy that made the Towers spent over 30 years on building it. He had no training other than tile making and cement mixing. He worked with basic tools, nothing mechanical in any way. Check out the above link for more information. It was amazing in person.

Apart from organizing art shows, Edith also works at the community art center that is connected to the Watts Towers. Their current show features art about the current state of our prison system, some done by inmates themselves.

There is a small room in the Center that houses some interesting Native American/Mexican artifacts, mainly musical instruments. It's a permanent display, but according to Edith it is quite neglected.

After the tour, Porous and I went back to Walled City and finished up his portion of the installation/exhibit. Thanks to Edith, Walled City and Porous for the fun weekend!
