Melbourne --- Australian artist and friend of ours Hamishi, who participated in 11.11.11 last year, curated the group show "Sup Brow" at Melbourne's 1(h)ree Gallery. Unfortunately the show has concluded, but here are some images from works by Henry Gunderson, Tom O'Hern, Hiroyasu Tsuri (TwoOne), Dylan Martorell, Miso, Lola Dupre, Sean Morris, and Hamishi.
Where is the middle ground between high and lowbrow art in Australia's regressive commercial contemporary art scene? "Sup Brow?" is an exhibition presenting an informed discussion on the relevance of "Juxtapoz Art" in contemporary art and the border between Lowbrow and Mainstream Australian painting through the lens of Australian and international painters, illustrators and mixed practice artists.

Our Life" this Thursday in downtown San Francisco at Galette 88 - 88 Hardie Place (off Kearny St, between Sutter and Bush streets). All proceeds of sales going to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

SAN FRANCISCO -- Mark Benson's "Get the Flu" at Ever Gold Gallery (ran through Sept 28th) has been lolling around my brain. Benson staged a performance by the same name during the show's opening, in which, for $50 a person, a registered nurse administered this season's flu shots and Benson gave out an editioned certificate of authenticity. Though I wanted to participate in Benson's flu shot piece, I didn't. Growing up in Berkeley, California ingrained a reflexive fear of common American medical customs, which I shun openly while lacking confidence in the science that vilifies them. I realize that seems wishy-washy verging on willful ignorance, but whatever. What would disturb my be-mulleted alternative doctors about a flu shots is precisely why "Get the Flu is great art: the flu antibodies injected last until you die, though their efficacy in preventing the flu diminishes in months, your resistance causes the virus to evolve (Time, Immunization Action Coalition.) ~continue reading

The Fecal Face softball team Poo's on First just concluded its 4th season, and we've notched 2 wins under our belt (wonderful moments indeed). We may not be the best coed team in the San Francisco Soft Ball League, but damn it, we have fun playing and are getting better every game.
So, here it is. If you're a SF lady who wants to join the good times, we're looking to fill a few spots. All you need is some sporting ability (swing bat, throw/ catch a ball), are reliable to show up Tuesday evenings for our games and/ or practice (games are either 6:30, 7:40, or 8:50). It's a fun way to break up the week, maybe catch a post game beer and scratch your competitive spirit. If interested, email our buddy Mike at: mmidden(at)salon.com
The Fecal Face softball team was formed through a Fecal Face twitter post last year. We were all strangers when we started playing together. Join the fun.

Last night we Bart'd over to Oakland for the sold out Bay Area premiere of Stacy Peralta's newest documentary Bones Brigade - the story of the Bones Brigade skate team of the 80s launching the careers of Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero and Mike McGill. The film gives the viewer an insiders look into the legendary skateboarding team that reveolutionized modern skateboarding. In attendance last night were Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero, and George Powell.
Tommy Guerrero (eyes closed, sorry), George Powell, Mike McGill, and Tony Hawk post screening
We grew up watching The Search for Animal Chin, and the film takes you back almost 10 years before Chin when the team was first formed, when Tony Hawk & Steve Caballero were somewhere around 12 years old and just starting their professional careers... The film is a trip down memory lane but also helps to remind us how great skateboarding is and how great a lot of the personalities in skateboarding are... Some sections could be edited down a bit (think it's still a work in progess). In any case, do see it, and check out some photos we got of some of the classic crew.

Not exactly the most joyous anniversary we've celebrated, but today marks the 1 year anniversary of our fire at our old location on Fillmore at Haight.
Was a hectic year, to say the least, but in the end we're in a larger space on Mission and 19th and are hopefully at the end of our insane transient gallery nomad status... One lesson learned, it's good to have insurance and it doesn't hurt to have friends who live across the street and on the street (Upper Playground, Mike Midden & Stephanie). Thanks to them we were able to save a lot of work that otherwise would have been ruined.
To see some video and pics from that bummer of days, click here.

"The Jangs" at Stephen Wirtz Thursday
Monday, 29 April 2013 11:07
San Francisco based photographer, Michael Jang, who's been shooting for decades and who has captured some great shots over the years (Reagan and Frank Sinatra is a good one) turned his camera on his family while growing up in the suburbs in the 70s. An intimate portrait of a Chinese-American family inside their Pacifica home living their lives. Sounds benign, which it is, but what also makes the images fascinating.

Fertile Menace, a new show of Mark Mulroney's (NY) work opened at Ever Gold on May 4th and it's not one to be missed. It is intelligently hilarious, with jokes riffing off sex, Foucault, and the body, and while it makes you laugh it's also going to make you think.

| Michael Garlington & The Metaphysical Fundraiser at 111 Minna
Although I missed the opening of Northern-California photographer Michael Garlington's newest show, Constructed Realities, I was fortunate enough to see the work still up during the Metaphysical fundraiser a couple weeks back at 111 Minna. Metaphysical fundraiser, an auction to benefit Wayne Ernzer. --- The ghoulish photographs in their heavy, hand-made frames are reminiscent of photos from the old west, and the glass crucifixes, complete with fetuses and guns, emphasize the accumulated time within the works themselves. Whether you're looking at the frames, the photos, or both, this show deserves a visit, and a walk through the golden archway Garlington constructed around the front door.

| ARYZ at Fifty24SF
ARYZ (Spain) opened his newest gallery show at Fifty24SF last Friday and, if you live in the Bay Area, you need to go. This dude can obviously paint, and he doesn't need an entire building to show his impecable skill. The show has lots of small works on paper which contrast his highly-defined line work to his hard-edged painted objects. The contrast between the hard and soft was the most striking thing to me about his work, since I had never seen it in person before, and the washes blend with the thick paint seamlessly. The show also contains a larger work on canvas, a huge head suspended in the back of the room, and a big wood sculpture of a wolf figure. This diversity in such a small space was impressive, and those of us that went to the opening even got to meet the man in person. If you didn't make it out this weekend, check it out before May 31st when it closes and these works will be off to some very happy new homes.

| Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.

| Recent Works by David Lyle
Working from found photographs, Lyle's paintings are created through a reductive painting process where each piece is rendered using only black paint and turpentine. Lyle begins this process by priming a panel with white gesso. He then paints a thin, rich, oily black veneer over the primed panel, slowly and systematically developing his images by removing some of the black paint with a cloth. In doing so, Lyle renders layer upon layer of various values of black paint resulting in his signature-style of luminescent works.

| Skewville & Mark Warren Jacques @White Walls (SF)
Two twin brothers from Brooklyn, Skewville brought the fun to their opening at White Walls last Saturday night with their new show, Amusement. After all, you can't take a show that starts with a sign reading "Sucks either Way" too seriously. Besides the simplistic yet detailed paintings, visitors got to ride on a bike-powered merry-go-round and throw bean bags at bottles like a carnival game. Even the works made of found materials, like the Battleship boombox and the suitcase made of tin lunch pails, brought a sense of humor to the night. After seeing the work in the back of the gallery, which was much more crowded, Skewville provided a light-hearted atmosphere in which viewers could drink beer, play games, and see some really great artworks.
