 Jeff blogs up his travels to NYC for his show that's up now at Jonathan Levine.
My brother Corey, assistant Aaron Mason and I set out for the big apple last week. This was my 7th trip out there and though I complain, NY never ceases to amaze. Aaron had been there before but Corey hadn't so we did a good bit of tourist stuff.
Day One- Wednesday
After an all night flight we arrived in NYC just in time for the Taxi cab strike. We didn't know at first but rode with a scab who ended up charging us $30 each person into the city. $90! It's usually supposed to be a $45 flat fee. I thought we got ripped off, but turns out that's what he was supposed to charge us if he chose to work during the strike. Welcome to NY!!
Got our hotel and headed over to JL Gallery. Started setting up the show. Jim Houser's work is awesome but all my photos turned out blurry for some reason. Out of the blue David Choe came by. He was in NYC to deliver his balloon characters (from Art Basel) to the Deitch art parade and stopped by to say hi. He was headed out the next morning to start a graf tour with Saber.
The rooftop of the gallery has a great view.
Afterwards we met up at Invisible NYC with our man Regino Gonzales. Always good to see him. This was one of those long days that when you try to think of what you did that morning it seems like two days ago. Wait it was two days ago.
Day Two- Thursday
Finished setting up in the morning so decided to have a nice afternoon stroll through Central Park. The weather was nice, the squirrels were out, and the frisbee guys were getting crazy in Sheep Meadow.
Jonathan LeVine hosted a dinner party for Jim Houser and I at an Italian restaurant. Everyone from the gallery was there. Afterwards we all headed to Reed Space to check out the Scion "Beautiful World" show. It's a traveling show I'm in and just happened to coincide with my trip.

Ended up at Max Fish to meet up with Carlo McCormick. I did some table drawing and apparently just missed meeting Neckface. He might have been in there with me but no one knows what this man of mystery looks like.
Saw a Doberman Pincher bondage mask (yuck!) and then ended the night at Invisible with Aaron getting some final touches from Regino.
Day 3- Friday
Went to the Met for a couple hours. That place is too big. I've been to the Met almost every single time I've stayed in NY. I think next time I'm gonna skip it.

Afterwards we went to see Blaq Audio, Davey Havok's AFI side project. Davey is a big fan and collector of art so he got me, LeVine, Brandi Pomfret, and my brother Corey backstage passes.

Day 4- Saturday
Slept in late.
Corey and I went to go see the WTC ground zero and some other things downtown like Trinity Church and Wall street. Once again, I've been down here every single time I've been to NYC. When people visit ground zero they think it'll be a quiet place to pay your respects but in reality it's turned into a tourist stop complete with conspiracy theorists on bullhorns passing out flyers. I always think it's kinda cool in a way that we can express our beliefs any way we want in this country. Anyways, Trinity Church is beautiful but the cemetary was closed today. I love the old grave markers and wanted Corey to see them.
Of course I had to take my brother to the best bronze nutz in NYC. I made up some story about how you're supposed to rub them for good fortune.
The opening was hot but fun. Met a lot of great New Yorkers but we didn't take too many photos. NYC heat wave + East coast humidity + no air conditioning + mass people makes for an interesting melting feeling.
Took some shots after people left. I'm very happy with how the show turned out. I'm digging the white frames and pieces on paper.
Went to a bar afterwards, can't remember it's name. Hi Five or something? Hi-Fi maybe?? Who knows. Every night we end up in the East Village, which is awesome.
The interesting thing about NYC is that if you still have some energy, you're never really done for the night. After walking all over downtown, doing the opening, and going to a bar there's still more bars and restaurants open to check out. What time do the bars close? 6AM? Never? NYC is crazy. We went to SushiSamba a Brazillian/Japanese fusion restaurant and it was really good. Our waiter was from California and she said we had a "California vibe". Probably because I say "like" alot, and "dude" and "man".
Day 5- Sunday
Was out late the night before, I guess that goes hand in hand with NYC. Slept in late again. Walked around Chinatown and Little Italy and then headed over to Invisible NYC to get a tattoo from Regino.
Shawn Barber has a show up in their shop. I was totally going to buy the Seen hands but Seen himself beat me to it.
Kestrel tattoo. RG rocks! Just the outline for now- shading, details and color coming in January...
Day 6- Monday
Flew home. Flight was delayed an hour and we spent 1 hour waiting in line to take off. Too tired to take any photos.

Mexico City based Curiot, whose sold out solo show Age of Omuktlans ran last March at FFDG, just finished this great mural entitled "El Retorno de Akhankutli" in Mexico. He recently completed one in Berlin too which we'll be posting in the coming week. The guy is very very talented in our eyes.

This made our day. Not only do we love pizza but we also love Henry Gunderson... So a board shapped like a hot slice designed by Henry Gunderson for The Good Company, well... this writer needs to go for a slice right now.

| Wendell McShine @Fifty24SF
Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.

| The Tornatos in Moore, OK by Justin Clemons
I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. It was just too much to take in, too much to process. So, I did what comes naturally and took images. It sort of helped me separate from the chaos and helped me focus.

| John Felix Arnold III in Japan (Part 4)
Well, it looks like John Felix Arnold rocked Tokyo with his opening with Koutaro Ooyama at Spes Lab a few weeks back. Even a language barrier couldn't prevent the success of their collaboration. They invited everyone they met on trains, in cars, cafes, bars, restaurants, and people responded by attending, and bringing their families and friends as well.

| Sanjay & Craig Premiere Party (+LA)
Last Thursday evening, I was lucky enough to get invited to Nickelodeon's premiere party for their newest cartoon, Sanja & Craig, created by three awesome dudes - Andreas Trolf, Jim Dirschberger, and Jay Howell. Hosted at Tony's Salon with pizza provided by Pizzanistas, the premiere party was filled with libations and celebrations, even a break-dance battle broke out. Congrats to everyone who worked on the show, and especially Trolf, Jim, and Jay who all have been working tirelessly on it. Sanja & Craig premiered Saturday 10:30 am 11 am on Nickelodeon. You can watch Sanjay and Craig Episode 1: Brett Venom on hulu. and read about how the guys came up with it in this interview with The LA Times. Now, here's some photos from the premiere.

| Murals at Harry Wirtz Elementary
Last year, Eric Caruso a teacher at Harry Wirtz Elementary School (Paramount, CA, near LA) had an idea to invite some artists to paint some murals at the school because there wasn't an arts program for the kids. That brilliant idea resulted in some awesome murals by artists Seitaku Aoyama, Yusuke Hanai, Rich Jacobs, Tim Kerr and Albert Reyes.

The Book and Job Gallery (San Francisco) really stepped it up with the opening of Daniel Chen's loveBlast on May 4th. Complete with a doorman, piano player, old fashioneds, and some really nice paintings, I could hardly believe I was at the Book and Job. The paintings varied in size, and the show was balanced nicely between them, the spray-can work on the walls, and the smaller drawings displayed throughout. The kind notes Chen wrote on the walls are certain to brighten your day, and the rest of the work is definitely worth a look. It was a very classy evening and I hope they continue to intersperse shows like these into their schedule in the future

Tucker Nichols emailed over this Whole Foods poster (below right) which looks a lot like one of Corey Arnold's photos (bottom left). Coincidence? Where they inspired by Corey's photo? Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Wait, on this Instagram, Corey Arnold writes "Ripped off!", so we guess that's your answer.

Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

Oakland: Organizers Trying to Keep Monthly Street Art Party Alive

OAKLAND -- First Fridays is hoping Oakland hasn't seen the last of the one of a kind event... The street art party is free to attend, but organizers say with police and other costs the price tag to throw the monthly party is $20,000... The City of Oakland has been footing the bill for months and after kicking in $500,000, it's pulling the plug... Organizers are now asking for donations and developing a vendor fee schedule to try and keep the party alive. ~continue reading

Disputed Banksy graffiti art sold for $1.1M in London

Wonder if our old emails with Banksy are worth a few thousand dollars. It seems everything the dude touches is worth a million dollars these days! Nutty and much deserved.
A disputed Banksy graffiti artwork removed from a gritty London neighbourhood has sold for approximately $1.1 million US at auction. The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. The spray-painted, stenciled work depicts a child labourer using an antique sewing machine to create a Union Jack bunting.
