We're big fans of this Minneapolis based artist. So when we decided to start the regular feature "Created Step by Step" it made sense to ask him to kick things off. So take a look how one of Gregory's works gets to the gallery wall.
Here is the start... I have been working smaller for the last three months because I had rotator cuff surgery, which has made it very difficult to move my arm. So, on the porch with two bushes, a couple of pencils and some pens.
Working on a fabriano pad is something new for me. Dave Andree turned me on to that. It is nice, small and keeps the work from warping.
I start off by simply sitting and looking at something for a while. I'm interested most in the landscape, and in particular the movement. Watching quaking aspens or seeing birds zipping around, that is usually enough to get something started. Then - I just start in with the initial gestures. This first step is violent. It is like being in a particle excelerator. There is this feeling, and then there is the paper...and I charge up the idea in my head and collide it with the paper.
The first couple strokes set the stage as for what is going to happen with the rest of the work. I call this the SET. In any space there is a SET, that is, the available objects, chemicals, conditions to work with. It is the given. So, at this point the set is being fleshed out and in my mind the clock is starting. First, we start out with nothing but a blank sheet of paper. Then the set is established. Next, the objects in the set start to react with each other and evolve.
Here you see some double lines and single lines being made. Flow of particles. Transfer of elements. Movement of material.
The dome is filled with a cream color and the sky is started.
The ground starts to grow along the lines of transport.
At this point it is a game of action/reaction. If I put this here.. then that will develop there. It is all unfolding over time. The process of creating the work on the paper emulates the actual process that takes place in life.
Inside the dome the main landscape starts to develop. It is within the lines of transportation. The city limits. Possible to drive to on a weekend. This is the hot bed of activity because this is where the most material is.. there is friction, reproduction, lending, and the foundation for growth and decay.
Outside the dome a pine cone. Seed propagation. Sending out scouts to see if the exterior landscape is hospitable to the fruits.
the development of the city inside the dome. This is a photo taken from my studio window ... printed out and transferred to the paper.
at this point there is more transfers applied. One on the right hand side says "open system attack". An open system is where new objects and particles can easily be introduced: something like a landscape. A closed system is where it is relatively difficult to introduce new material. In this phase the landscape is witnessing the development of housing structures. All the demands made on a landscape from civilization, change the system. And usually the development of housing structures or agriculture is pretty destructive to the native landscape.
Details
water runoff - floods in the flatlands and the development of streams.
detail
the landscape adapts, changes from one thing to another. The initial system attack is memory, and the new set moves on as something different.
details of surface quality. Letterpress stamped Oxygen. Transferred Hydrogen.

There are AD markers that come in clear.. a BLENDER.. make a print out on a laser printer and then rub the blender on the back.. toxic stuff.. so take care... and rub with the end of the marker to transfer it onto the paper. or even more toxic... I have heard/seen people use acetone with photocopies..never done it.. because this process is so easy... and managable...
