Ryan Converse - Mini Interview
Written by Trippe
Friday, 25 December 2009, 3:30am

From the Pacific Northwest where the wild things roam.

We get a lot of great emails from a lot of talented people introducing us to their work. From time to time we'll be sharing their work here in our mini interviews segment... To be considered for a mini interview send a few jpegs to: mini(at)fecalface.com

Make sure the images are at least 600 pixels in width.

Location? Age? Education? Website?

Olympia Washington - 21 years young currently attending the Evergreen State College studying film and mythology - http://RyanConverse.blogspot.com

How would you describe your work to someone?

With hand motions and big words - I would succinctly describe it as Mythopoeia, which is a word I recently discovered that I feel sums up what I am trying to do quite nicely.

Influences?

Codex Seraphinus, Marcel Dzama and The Holy Mountain have really effected me Bridget Irish and Carla Azar are people that have personally influenced me.

Cheese burgers or tofu burgers?

Egg sandwich?

Working routine? Music? Time of day?

I surround myself with my unfinished projects and work whenever I can - late nights and mid afternoon are good - I am listening to Deerhunter right now if that helps.

How do you pay the bills?

Sit at a table at Evergreen and ask people to fill out surveys.

Describe your process for creating new work.

I work in a lot of different mediums so it varies, but I keep a sketchbook and usually have thought about a piece a great deal before I begin. I usually conjure things in 2d and eventually move them into a sculptural form if they are prevalent enough in my work.

Tools of the trade?

I am a scrounger I use a lot of found materials - But my standby tools would be Chicken wire, acrylic paint, spray paint, clay, fabric, fur paper bags, card-stock, microns, hands, and teeth.

What are you really excited about right now?

I am really excited about my next show and starting to film some movies with these characters. I have also started to write stories about this world these characters come from, which has helped me understand what I am doing, which is always exciting.

I just gave you $1,000,000. Quick, what do you do with it!

Open a commune with a factory... invite everyone I know, convince them to make me hundreds of costumes, start a synthesizer orchestra, buy an extremely expensive camera, hire a crew, buy a rare animal.... I don't know it would probably ruin me.

Best way to spend a day off?

Eating berries in a tree-house with my love.

What do you love most about where you live?

The woods and the creative souls.

Ok, your chance to rant and rave about something... Talk shit.

I love to collaborate and work on interesting projects, send me and email if you could use some help, or if you live in the northwest and want to be in some movies you should contact me as well.

Upcoming shows/ projects?

Show in January at the Northern in Oly then a few shows in Seattle, a few commissions to finish, filming a movie in the Spring, and then who knows what, hopefully something amazing.

SF Weekly's Nice Coverage
Monday, 06 September 2010, 11:54am

Thanks to the SF Weekly for the nice write up on our 10 Year Anniversay Show opening on Friday!

It’s strange that it took years for the visual art world to establish its online voice. Despite a plethora of image-sharing services such as Flickr, Tumblr, and ffffound, sites that meaningfully document the art scene have been few and far between. Over the past decade, San Francisco’s Fecal Face has risen to the top of the heap, providing the art community with its very own Pitchfork or Gawker Media through consistently strong news coverage, a dependable calendar, and tart criticism. -read on

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: THE RADIANT CHILD
Monday, 30 August 2010, 3:46pm

Opening up this Friday @Lumiere Theater on California @Polk here in SF and is also opening in Berkely as well. More dates and cities.

The meteoric rise and fall of Jean-Michel Basquiat, born 1960. In the crime-ridden NYC of the 1970s, he covers the city with the graffiti tag SAMO. In 1981 he puts paint on canvas for the first time, and by 1983 he is an artist with “rock star status.” In 1985 he and Andy Warhol become close friends and painting collaborators, but they part ways and Warhol dies suddenly in 1987. Basquiat’s heroin addiction worsens, and he dies of an overdose in 1988. The artist was 25 years old at the height of his career, and today his canvases sell for more than a million dollars. With compassion and insight, Tamra Davis details the mysteries that surround this charismatic young man, an artist of enormous talent whose fortunes mirrored the rollercoaster quality of the downtown scene he seemed to embody.

David Lyle Paintings
Thursday, 26 August 2010, 2:13pm

Wanna thank NYC based painter David Lyle for sending us this fantastic print. David's paintings are inspired from found photographs. He "feels that to find a lost photo and paint it, allows the photo and the memory to have a second life." We've been fans of his work for some time now. ~check some

The Vapor Room
Wednesday, 25 August 2010, 12:23pm

Wanna thank marijuana dispensary The Vapor Room for being a sponsor of our 10 year anniversary show opening up on Sept 10th here in San Francisco. Funny because we don't even smoke pot here at Fecal Face, but if we did, The Vapor Room would be our jam.
