In a unique and diverse Detroit neighborhood a transition is taking place. People are moving out, but people are also starting to move back. There is a devotion to this neighborhood, a unique challange to create a place that is rich in diversity, exciting and fun to live in, beautiful and clean to play in. Ride-it Sculpture Park come this summer, with your help, will become the first sculpture park where you can officially ride the art. Not to mention a place where bored neighborhood teenagers and adults can meet, play, create, build and ride on.
Ride it Sculpture Park consists of four vacant commercial lots along East Davison Freeway in Detroit and an adjacent vacant house as the main site for the project. The house will serve as a mini indoor park, transforming parts of the house to be skateable and livable at the same time for visiting skateboarders and artists. The park will extend into the neighborhood revamping neglected alleys, garages and other vacant lots, creating a new and positive use for the forgotten and dismissed landscapes of this great city.

Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.
I spoke with Tristan Patterson, the film's director, over the phone and asked him some of the questions I had after watching his film.
ATTENTION: The following interview may contain SPOILERS -- so you may want to watch the film before you read it.
Skreech is what I describe as a crusty kid. He doesn't seem to shower often and often hangs around a semi-homeless group of friends. Anyways, midway through the film they all take a road trip together and all I could think about was how bad the van must've smelt.
"To be honest, I think we all smelt pretty bad," said Tristan "so I can't really be judgmental about it"
It's that approach to the filming that allowed Tristan to capture so many intimate moments though. Especially, in some of the scenes where he got footage of underage kids drinking and using drugs, which I imagine would've been next to impossible if he had started preaching at them.
"I wasn't witnessing anything that I wasn't doing at their age. So who am I to tell people about how to live their lives"
But what about when they would trespass onto peoples' properties to skate their pools? Wasn't he nervous?
"I figured that if anything happened, we'd be able charm our way out of it."
Skoolers are from an era of the past and a huge influence on where action sports is now. They say good things must come to an end, so here is a piece of history that needed to be documented. Thanks to Ferris Plock for sharing the skooler story with us.
In October 2011, after three years living in New York, artist Ian Strange [Kid Zoom] returned to Australia to create a major new installation work housed in Cockatoo Island's prestigious Turbine Hall. The exhibition featured a full-scale reproduction of his childhood home and a film documenting the violent destruction of three Holden commodores. This video documents what resulted.
This is an animation ourselves at Carne and Queso spent the last couple of months putting together. We tried to create an environment where the internet takes LSD and hangs out at a cartoon beach party with Terry Gilliam. "Waffle House" is a new single from the album Toothy Wavy, a collaboration between Isaiah Toothtaker and Max B, produced by the Hood Internet. Also on this track is the mad master Rapewolf aka Christwolf.
Windswept is a wind-driven kinetic facade created by Charles Sowers Studios. consisting of 612 freely-rotating directional arrows creating a large-scale observational instrument that reveals the complex interactions between the wind and the building. The wind arrows serve as discrete data points indicating the direction of local flow within the larger phenomenon.
The best part of the cinema program at SF State was taking the history/ theory classes. They would screen iconic classic films in SF State's wonderful Coppola Theater. Always took these classes early in the morning. That's the best time to see any film. As opposed to viewing a film at night and then going to bed soon afterwards, viewing a film early in the morning allows you the entire day to reflect. Highly recommend your next viewing with a cup of coffee.

KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

Annica Cuppetelli (USA) and Cristobal Mendoza (Venezuela) are artists and collaborators focusing on the creation of site-specific, multimedia installations that address issues of space, interaction, and materiality. Their installations combine traditional craft and common materials with interactive video projections and computational design processes, and they address the formal qualities of a given site while creating an immersive and participatory environment. Cuppetelli obtained her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2008, and Mendoza at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007. They are based in Detroit, MI.

This drawing was inspired by that looming feeling that San Francisco is an isolated island from the rest of the country. Last Friday we were pleased to open up Dave Kinsey's first solo show in San Francisco since before 2000 when Dave was doing a lot of work in streets with his then work partner Shepard Fairey. A lot of the smaller works are homage to that era, i.e., the titles are San Francisco street names. Love his new direction.
After our Dave Kinsey opening last Friday, we made our way down Market Street for Luggage Store's opening of STREETOPIA. Ran into a lot of friends and was amazed at how transformed the gallery was. Multiple rooms built out to include a Free Cafe, a theater, a gallery/studio, and a library. Streetopia will host free performances, teachings, and talks in the city every day for the show's month-long run and, thus, will provide a temporary space that offers opportunities for participation, agency, critical thinking, learning, sharing of ideas, and tools for community building that will reverberate in the real city after the city we build in the gallery is long gone.
From Matt Moore: A new series of (entirely spraypaint) canvas painting created during a 1-month residency in Paris. A true evolution from the purely geometric abstractions I have explored in my past few exhibitions : Sun Ray Ricochet (Moscow 2011) + XYZ Axis (Cincinnati 2011) + Crystals & Lasers (Paris 2010) + Parallel Universe (Sao Paulo 2009) + 20/20 (Barcelona 2008). Got two new zines from Mildred and Pacolli for us to share with you. Pacolli's The Last Chance Kids is published through Volcom's Artist Series and is 40 pages and sells for only $7 printed on thick quality heavy stock.
Logan Crable emailed us the other day with an offer to view his Blow Job series. Normally we don't get offers to view someone's porn project, but we quickly learned that the blowing is more in the literal sense as opposed to the pleasuring form.

Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.
On the way home from Fecal Face a couple Fridays back we swung through Fifty24SF to catch the two day show with the LA based hip-hop photographer Michael Miller in celebration of his new book. West coast hip-hop iconic early 1990's hip-hop photographs, including numerous photos of 2pac, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Snoop Dogg, Warren G... the bonus: Eazy-E touting a skateboard and a gun?!
