 A preview of Echo Test opening Thurs Sept 10th @Fecal Face. Mel Kadel answers a few submitted viewer questions as well.
We're obviously excited about Mel Kadel's show Echo Test which opens at Fecal Face Dot Gallery September 10th (7-10pm). Below are a few preview images of her show which is going to feature over 40 new works ranging in size from 6" x 9" up to 44" x 44". Below is a small taste. For the full effect, we'll see you Thursday September 10th.

Hey, Mel. Fan of your work, good luck with the show!... I'd like to know about when you first started pursuing art as a career, as a way to make a living. Was it a hard decision to make? If so, why? Was there anything that comforted you in your decision or reinforced it?... Or is it just all you ever saw yourself doing? -submitted by Aaron Berger
Hey, thanks Aaron. I never worried about making a living off of art, for many reasons, but I did work really hard at pursuing it. Early on in high school, making drawings became a huge part of how I spent my time.
It's a strange path to be on, and it seems like every artist has to invent their own career in a unique way. I have friends that make a living off of it, and each one has a completely different way of approaching it. It's a good question. I ask people the same thing.
Over the years, I gravitated towards jobs that gave me enough freedom to work on my own stuff on the side. It was always really important to have that balance.
I tried approaching magazines and papers for illustration work really early on, with no luck there...i just started showing my drawings in neighborhood galleries and cafes without huge expectations.
I collaborated with a lot friends and bands on their album covers. Just small things that kept me busy and working on new stuff. It's been a very fulfilling slow roll, that i'm still figuring out.

It's a desk, by some windows, attached to the kitchen, in my house. I keep my desk clean and there's a pile of inks and pens near by.
I move outside to the porch sometimes to change it up and get better light. Travis Millard works in the room next to me, and he's messy.
Does the recurrent female figure in your artwork represent a particular person? You? A specific idea? -submitted by Araceli Gomez
I think the female(s) in my drawings are a lot of different people. I'm in there somewhere too, but it's not a story completely based around me.
I use to draw more than just women, and i'm sure i will again, but over time she just became this reoccurring character that I gravitate towards these days. To me, It's like the scenes and struggles that she gets involved in, are more of what the drawing is about than she is. Her age and ethnicity is meant to be vague, to help not corner her into a stereotype. I really want people to relate to her and what she's conquering, more than her gender.



Dear Mel, I am obsessed with your handmade art books (Rough Cookie, Honey Pool, and the recent Spring Lounge). They are unlike anything else out here. I was hoping you could talk a little bit about the step-by-step process of making these editions and how you are able to sell them so inexpensively. Are there any plans for more books or even or retrospective publication?

Hey Pete, I know you. I love working on those books, because putting drawings side by side in a collection ties the ideas behind them together. It takes around 3 months to make 100 books. I'll explain why...
I stain around 1,100 sheets of regular typing paper with coffee, out on my porch. I have a small porch, so I can only do about 20 sheets at a time. The sun bakes them and dries them out, making them wrinkly. So, once they are dry I stick them under a bunch of books and try to flatten them out. They never go back to flat, so I have to manually feed each sheet through my printer. My printer eats them up, spits them out, breaks down a lot.... hates it. That's the part of the process that makes me think it's a terrible idea to begin with, and I swear I'll never do it again. But then i do.
For the cover, I tear down sheets of printing paper and use the great Gocco machine to print the image on the front.
I fold and staple all the sheets here and that's that. No part of the process requires me to leave the house, except for the many trips to Staples to get more inks for the printer.
I don't even try to make money from these, but only break even if I can, because in the end it is a zine.
So far I've made 5 zines like this, and a couple of them I've done 2nd editions. I would love to keep making them, and eventually put them all together.
The process mimics how I make an actual drawing, so printing these images onto white glossy pages wouldn't work. If I did do a retrospective publication, there would still need to be coffee and sun involved somehow.

Hey there, I just got back from a short residency down in a small town two hours north of Mexico City called Tequisquiapan. I was asked to come down there to meet some of the crew of the Clipperton Project, which basically is going to be a crazy boat trip in March with scientists and artists going out to a very remote atoll in the Pacific called Clipperton Island. Anyways, I thought you might like to see some photos of the town and the graffiti that I was surprised to find there.

Before the show it was pretty much just me and Pacolli painting the whole gallery and doing all the instalations and hanging all the work. lots of shit to be done. I also painted the front of Choque the week after the opening. And we had a little concert at Choque in which I played keyboard and two other folks played guitar and sang. Ephameron went there the day before the opening and did a tape installation as well. During the month we also had a zine/print/shirt sale at Choque as well. It all went very well and we had a blast! -Mildred

Mark Whalen & Autolux

Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie), who's showing with Jay Howell at FFDG w/ an opening set for Sat., Feb 18th (6-9pm), did paintings for Autolux's new video for The Science of Imaginary Solutions which was animated & directed by Thomas McMahan. The video premieres online Feb 12th at midnight.
Before the online release, they're hosting a preview party Sat evening across from LACMA in LA to celebrate and screen the new video. ~complete details.

Mission Map Project

A bunch of Mission district businesses here in SF (Mike Giant, Benny Gold, Joshy D, and others) got together to put together a Mission Map of businesses you should check out. Map and app release party goes down Saturday @111 Minna in SF (7-10pm)... We just moved FFDG to the Mission and didn't make the 1st version to be included. There are talks of a future V2 release.

The Story of Sue Nami

In the days following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, I was asked to make a poster for the Devo show at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The image was a Japanese girl, wearing a nuclear t shirt, with the kanji character for earth tattooed on her shoulder. She was dead. I called her Sue Nami, and much to my surprise, the band liked it. ~keep reading Zolton's story of Sue.

Josh Short @Ever Gold, Tonight

Ever Gold in SF opens a month long residency with Josh Short's Bomb Shelter Radio and Tenderloin Self- Defense Club tonight, Thurs (6-10pm). Check the video for a complete picture of what to expect.
Over the course of his residency at Ever Gold Gallery, Josh Short will build "Bomb Shelter Radio" and host several live sonic events that will include experimental noise transmissions, live metal and hardcore bands, and subversive FM radio interventions. This will also be aided by guerrilla public installations of radios installed around the Tenderloin bringing his interventions directly to the street as a form of audio graffiti. During the day the gallery will become the "Tenderloin Self-Defense Club", where Short will offer martial arts instruction to the neighborhood inhabitants, artists, and musicians. ~show details
