The Lonely Life
Tuesday, 17 January 2012 /// Written by Trippe

Our friends in the Austin based band ((sounder)) created this Kickstarter to raise money so they may create a film that will accompany their new record, starring Will Oldham and featuring animations by Jeremy Fish, Mel Kadel, Travis Millard, Michael Sieben and Okay Mountain Collective.

A $75 donation gets you a collab print featuring the aforementioned artists... Here, check the vid below so Mike Aho of Sounder can tell you all about it.

Double Breaks @Double Break
Tuesday, 06 December 2011 /// Written by Michael C. Hsiung

A few November weekends back, I headed down with Travis Millard and Jim Dirschberger for o Breaks, a group show curated by Jay Howell and Louis Schmidt, which opened 11.11.11 at Double Break store and gallery in San Diego, CA.

The show included over 30 artists including Bill Griffith, Russ Pope, Neil Blender, Mark Whalen, Thomas Campbell, Marco Zamora, Deth Kills, Chris Sullivan, Ruth Swanson, Sean Stout, Rob Helmstetter, Christopher Kardambikis, Rich Bott, Jim Dirschberger, Deth P. Sun, Mel Kadel, REMIO, David Cook, Michael C. Hsiung, Travis Millard, Tim Presley, Ryan Travis Christian, Thomas McMahan, Jay Howell, Louis M. Schmit, Jesse Balmer, Matt Coors, Mark Mulroney, and Ed Templeton.

Hope I got all those sites correct. Anyhow tons of folks showed up for the opening, drank tons at the local bar, 3 out of 4 of us who carpooled together barfed, crashed on Jim's Motel 6 floor, ordered a late pizza, and ran over a ham and cheese sandwich on our way home.

Mike Maxwell stopped by with some presents. Thanks for the cards, zine and shirts.

Mark Whalen next to his piece.

Ed Templeton pieceeeee!

Something exciting just happened and I think I missed it.

Dream Team in Sao Paulo - Part 2
Monday, 05 December 2011 /// Written by Trippe

San Francisco based Mildred emailed us some photos from a recent trip he and Pacolli took to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the group show Dream Team she curated featuring the likes of Travis Millard, Mel Kadel, Michael Hsiung, Mark Todd, Esther Pearl Watson, Matthew Rodriguez, and many others. Words and photos from Mildred.

Before the show it was pretty much just me and Pacolli painting the whole gallery and doing all the instalations and hanging all the work. lots of shit to be done. I also painted the front of Choque the week after the opening. And we had a little concert at Choque in which I played keyboard and two other folks played guitar and sang. Ephameron went there the day before the opening and did a tape installation as well. During the month we also had a zine/print/shirt sale at Choque as well. It all went very well and we had a blast! -Mildred

These R the Good Days
Wednesday, 15 June 2011 /// Written by Trippe

We're back from a couple days off after a hectic last week. Thanks to R/GA for asking me to speak last Friday. Had a blast drinking Muffin Street beers and speaking to everyone about Fecal Face, how it got started and what it all means to me.

Mel Kadel and Travis Millard collab

Mildred's photo from Sat's opening

Also thanks to Mel Kadel and Travis Millard who were in SF last week setting up their show @FFDG which you can view in person as the gallery will be open this week Wed-Sat (1-6pm) - 248 Fillmore @Haight. Photos from the opening and of the work will be online in the next day or two.

If you don't need to be inside today and you're here in SF, get outside. Ride your bike to the beach or across the GG Bridge because it looks like it's going to be ridiculous out there today.

Mel Kadel & Travis Millard Opening Saturday
Thursday, 09 June 2011 /// Written by Trippe

Los Angeles based Travis Millard and Mel Kadel will be showing individual and collabrative works at FFDG with an opening reception Saturday, June 11, 2011 (7-10pm). Both artists will be present and beer & wine served as usual.

Since Mel Kadel's last show at FFDG in 2009, her work has become much more layered. The thick layers of hand cut paper, with foregrounds and backgrounds, are reminiscent of engravings. The technique has added dimension to the pieces and seems to add to the strength of the characters and their surroundings. The work as a whole communicates interconnectedness and balance. The character is determined as usual, with patterns and obstacles surrounding her adventure.

Travis Millard's drawings included in the show explore a variety of themes, including waking dream states, ultra violence, repetitive movements and other oddities of the imaginative landscape. Ultimately, the work seeks to find respite in humor and peace through drawing from a host of modern personal anxieties.

Also on display will be Travis Millard's ghost sculpture project which is an experiment from the ground up. Unfamiliar with the process of roto-casting and minimal sculpture experience, this was achieved through trial and error, and the help of trusted associates. The result is an edition of 50 ghost sculptures and a video produced with the efforts of photographer Theo Jemison, animator Jim Dirschberger, and music by El-P.

The Story of Sue Nami
Tuesday, 31 January 2012, 9:36am

In the days following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, I was asked to make a poster for the Devo show at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The image was a Japanese girl, wearing a nuclear t shirt, with the kanji character for earth tattooed on her shoulder. She was dead. I called her Sue Nami, and much to my surprise, the band liked it. ~keep reading Zolton's story of Sue.

Your SF Photos

Last week we did our first themed Photo of the Day asking you to email in your quintessential San Francisco photos. We got so many great entries and couldn't squeeze them all in. So, here's a bit of overflow from the images emailed in.

Hola from Tequisquiapan Mexico

Hey there, I just got back from a short residency down in a small town two hours north of Mexico City called Tequisquiapan. I was asked to come down there to meet some of the crew of the Clipperton Project, which basically is going to be a crazy boat trip in March with scientists and artists going out to a very remote atoll in the Pacific called Clipperton Island. Anyways, I thought you might like to see some photos of the town and the graffiti that I was surprised to find there.

FFDG's Permanent Home

We can finally shut up about FFDG's fire, about FFDG's temp space, about all the transitions, because we signed a 2 year lease on a new space in the heart of the Mission District last night!

Real Etheral by Evan Mann

Real Ethereal embraces our mysterious relationship with life. It blends the physical with the metaphysical on a journey through an ever-transitioning space where common interactions become extraordinary and perception ventures into the otherworldly. Real Ethereal examines possibilities of unseen realities and metaphorically represents the winding path that reveals before us and conceals behind us; the future remains a mystery while the past fades quickly into the recesses of our mind. We are left with the present: the mysterious reality of our existence; the hair of time difficult to grasp.

High 5s: As The World Turns

... we look forward to the new year.

Josh Peters is a La based painter/ curator/ cool guy/ I chatted with him recently about his work, here it is.
