Derelict Nightclub Reborn as Secret Street Art Gallery

50 of the world's finest street artists have been given the run of a derelict nightclub in the heart of Paris.
Les Bains-Douches, a stone's throw from the Pompidou Centre, was built in 1885 as a municipal bathhouse. More recently, as Les Bains, it became one of the coolest nightclubs in Paris, in its time a favourite haunt of Mick Jagger, Kate Moss, Johnny Depp and Andy Warhol. But some over-enthusiastic DIY work by the nightclub's director led to the building being declared a safety hazard and in 2010, it was ordered to be closed. ~continue reading

The Yok & Sheryo

Brooklyn based artists Sheryo and The Yok recentely completed the mural "Pipe Dreams" in Long Island City at 5 pointz. The Yok also emailed over some photos fom a recent trip to Mexico for the Festival Anonymous held near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico from this past January... Awesome, we're heading to Mexico in a couple weeks.

Street Artist Aryz in Copenhagen

Before his large mural for the Galore Urban Art Festival (Copenhagen) last summer, the Spanish street artist Aryz travelled an hour away from Copenhagen to reach Nastved, a town that lies on the island of Zealand. Here he painted a fresh piece on a mural (opposite to the old post office close to Naestved Station, which is a part of Naestved Youth School of Art and decoration project "Nestved Art City". While he was in the town he also painted some cool pieces on large MDF wood panels and these works aro now on display at the local waiting room at Naetved Station.

Sten & Lex in Shanghai, China

One of our favorite's, the Italian duo Sten & Lex, emailed over some images from their current show running through April 30th in Shanghai, China at Magda Danysz Gallery
Sten & Lex have been doing stencils on the street since 2000/2001 and today their work is part of the urban landscape in their home town of Rome, London, Paris, Barcelona, New York. During that early period in Rome, and Italy in general, there didn’t exist a strong stencil culture such as there was in France and Sten & Lex may be considered as the pioneers of "Stencil Graffiti" in Italy and were the first to be considered "stencil artists". All the work of Sten & Lex results from an individual path that developed far from art academies and design institutes and far from classic writing and graffiti background. The duo are best known in the history of stencil making for introducing the halftone stencil technique where the main part of their stencil portraits are composed by thousands of lines. They usually produce portraits from people they have photographed themselves or found in family photos album, anonymous people.

ROA & Skateistan

World traveling street artist ROA completed some board graphics for the nonprofit Skateistan who bring skateboarding to children in Afghanistan and Cambodia
"My purpose of my visit to Cambodia was an introduction to the Skateistan and also to the Sk8room project. It's a beautiful project because they help kids that don't have a lot of opportunities and let them be kids. I skateboarded as a kid. I grew up in the 80's so skateboarding for me was one of the most important things as a teenager and it came together for me with graffiti and hip-hop culture. So it was really important and you see now it still influences me. Early Skateboard graphics of Powell and Santa Cruz had such a special meaning for me as a teenager to begin with and it is still a big part of my life.” - ROA
The ROA x The SK8room skate decks will be available for sale only through www.thesk8room.com Twenty percent of all sales will be donated to Skateistan, a not-for-profit that teaches empowerment through skateboarding to children in impoverished countries like Afghanistan and Cambodia.

FFDG is pleased to present Mexico City based painter and street artist Curiot (Favio Martinez) in his first solo show in the United States entitled “Age of Omuktlans” featuring 11 new colorful and vibrant acrylic paintings on canvas. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 8th (6-9pm). The artist will be present. Beer and wine will be available. The show runs through April 14th.
Curiot’s colorful paintings, featuring mythical half-animal half-human figures and scenes, which allude to Mexican traditions (geometric designs, Day of the Dead styles, myths and legends, tribal elements), are rendered in precise detail with a mixture of highly vibrant yet complementary colors. “Growing up in the States sort of gave me a diluted Mexican culture, I had no clue what I was missing out on until I moved back 10 years ago”, says Curiot. “The bright colors, folklore, ancient cultures and the beautiful handcrafts are some of the things that I embraced and which influence my work deeply”. The 11 new paintings in “Age of Omuktlans” tell the story of man’s distance from his natural path as he focuses his energy on satisfying his material pleasures and the dystopia this creates.
Curiot is a painter and street artist working in Mexico City. He earned his B.F.A from the Universidad Michoacana de S.N. Hidalgo in 2008. His paintings have been exhibited in diverse solo and group venues including: Fecal Face, Anno Domini, Fifty24MX, CC186, Centro Cultural Border, Galería David Alfaro Siqueiros, Lavamp, La Cream Galería, and received an award for his work “Mass Media” in the 7th National Biennial of Painting and Engraving Alfredo Zalce. Curiot´s work has been featured in numerous online and print publications including Beautiful Decay, Indie Rocks, El Fanzine, and Tongue Mag.

Miss Van is one of our all time favs and she features in the latest issue 21 of VNA. After a lengthy hiatus from painting on the streets, we caught up with her in Sao Paulo where she was feeding off the local vibes and getting sparked to paint outside again. We're glad shes back.

While You Were Away @941 Geary

While We Were Away at 941 Geary is a great show. That's almost enough to say, other than the fact that you should go see it. Curated by gallery director Tova Lobatz, the show features artists from the US and Europe (except for Chanoir who is from Columbia) whom Lobatz encountered in her travels. Along with their works, most of the artists included a suitcase with all the necessary items for their creative process. Whereas How & Nosm obviously carry stencils, Poesia carries a camera and paint-stained T-shirt. Eachartist's label was also in the form of a passport page, giving both biographical information and a quotefrom them. This personal insight, literally seeing into the internal objects of their reality as artists, givesthe show an intimate relationship between curator and artist, and therefore artist and viewer. Now, that is enough to say. Just go see the show before it closes March 2nd.

Max Rippon Mini Interview

As we approach the Holidays (are we there now?), we thought we'd check in with some of the artists currently showing in our Winter Group Show at FFDG on display through Jan 12th.
We've been posting up Barcelona based Max Rippon's (RIPO) work for years now (since 2009?). He does a lot of it outdoors and some of it indoors like he did with his recent show at White Walls (pics).
For some press release terminology:
Heavily influenced by sign painting, Ripo creates text-based work with an urban aesthetic, exploring single words and short turns of phrase with a tongue-in-cheek sensibility. Elaborately-drawn fonts, formed with watercolor, ink, graphite, sign painters enamel and oil pastels on delicate handcut paper, allow us to appreciate the aesthetics of the words regardless of their associations.... Here is a short interview with the prolific fella covering all the bases.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?
It can range from midday to midnight. An "average" day (I actually don't have
these too often) I wake up mid-morning and do a bit of work in the studio or on
the computer before running errands. If I get out of the house too late I won't
be able to do anything since most places close in Spain during lunchtime.
It's one of the most inconvenient things about living here. Then later in the
afternoon I'll get down to business in the studio until someone distracts me
and drags me out at night.

| Gary Baseman Interview
Gary Baseman's retrospective "The Door is Always Open" at the Skirball in LA opened recently to massive crowds in a huge celebratory opening party. The exhibition is so complex and personal, delving into Baseman's background, family history, and all the layers of prolific work that he has done over the years. After the opening festivities winded down, I caught up with Baseman for an interview. We discussed the underlying meaning to some of the components of the show and how it felt for him, coming from such an honest personal perspective in putting this massive show together.

| Michael Garlington & The Metaphysical Fundraiser at 111 Minna
Although I missed the opening of Northern-California photographer Michael Garlington's newest show, Constructed Realities, I was fortunate enough to see the work still up during the Metaphysical fundraiser a couple weeks back at 111 Minna. Metaphysical fundraiser, an auction to benefit Wayne Ernzer. --- The ghoulish photographs in their heavy, hand-made frames are reminiscent of photos from the old west, and the glass crucifixes, complete with fetuses and guns, emphasize the accumulated time within the works themselves. Whether you're looking at the frames, the photos, or both, this show deserves a visit, and a walk through the golden archway Garlington constructed around the front door.

| John Felix Arnold III in Japan (Part 3)

| ARYZ at Fifty24SF
ARYZ (Spain) opened his newest gallery show at Fifty24SF last Friday and, if you live in the Bay Area, you need to go. This dude can obviously paint, and he doesn't need an entire building to show his impecable skill. The show has lots of small works on paper which contrast his highly-defined line work to his hard-edged painted objects. The contrast between the hard and soft was the most striking thing to me about his work, since I had never seen it in person before, and the washes blend with the thick paint seamlessly. The show also contains a larger work on canvas, a huge head suspended in the back of the room, and a big wood sculpture of a wolf figure. This diversity in such a small space was impressive, and those of us that went to the opening even got to meet the man in person. If you didn't make it out this weekend, check it out before May 31st when it closes and these works will be off to some very happy new homes.

Water McBeer is please to announce its latest exhibition "Precious" a solo exhibition by David Bayus (April 6 - May 4, 2013) -- David Bayus born 1982 holds his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. David lives and works in San Francisco and is a founding member of the basement collective. This will be his first exhibition with the world renown Water McBeer Gallery highlighting his most recent achievements with paint and digital media. David Bayus will be exhibiting 5 relatively large-scale mixed media works along with a collaborative object featuring Hungarian sculptor H.R KOONS.

| Hard Time Mini Mall @The Shooting Gallery
The Shooting Gallery handed over the reins to the Red Truck Gallery (a New Orleans based gallery) which curated their new show, Hard Time Mini Mall and opened the it on Saturday night. This is my favorite show (so far) in the Shooting Gallery's new space and was packed full of art, a mini bar, and cowhide rugs. The Red Truck Gallery chose works with clear craftsmanship and it was easy to see in Ian Berry's denim assemblages and Chris Roberts-Antieau's awesome quilts. The space was completely packed, making it hard to see each piece individually, but this show deserves a second trip anyway. I look forward to spending more time with the chandeliers, automatons, and paintings before the show comes down on May 4th.

| Recent Works by David Lyle
Working from found photographs, Lyle's paintings are created through a reductive painting process where each piece is rendered using only black paint and turpentine. Lyle begins this process by priming a panel with white gesso. He then paints a thin, rich, oily black veneer over the primed panel, slowly and systematically developing his images by removing some of the black paint with a cloth. In doing so, Lyle renders layer upon layer of various values of black paint resulting in his signature-style of luminescent works.
