Too Big to Fail Monday, 17 October 2011 /// Written by Trippe
NY based Illustrator Anthony Freda emailed over his latest "Too Big to Fail" which seems quite fitting in these wonderful economic times.
According to this theory, certain financial institutions are so large and so interconnected that their failure will be disastrous to an economy. Proponents of this theory believe that these institutions should become recipients of beneficial financial and economic policies from governments or central banks to keep them alive. It is thought that companies that fall into this category take positions that are high-risk, as they are able to leverage these risks based on the policy preference they receive. The term has emerged as prominent in public discourse since the 2007–2010 global financial crisis.

He created this drawing of every placard he found on display. You can download a high res of the drawing here. Download, print, and you'll have your own protest sign addressing multiple concerns in the simplicity of one sign.

John Casey @Oakland's Swarm Thursday, 06 October 2011 /// Written by Trippe
Oakland based artist John Casey just opened Hands and Pants over at Swarm Gallery last Saturday, Oct 1st. We meant to add this preview last week, but the fire kept us pretty busy away from updating the site. In any case, check out these great works. A solid group of artists John collaborated with.
Hands & Pants is a broader collaborative venture, employing over 40 of John's artist peers. John drew either hands or pants (blue-jean-clad waist-down shod figures) or both, in his simple pen-and-ink style on 8"x10" Bristol paper. An invited artist was given the hands and/or pants and asked to complete the figure in any way the artist saw fit.
"Black Light", Pencil on Panel, 36"x48", 2011
"Blowing Smoke", Pencil on Panel, 14"x11", 2011
Hands & Pants collaboration with Scott Greenwalt, 10"x8", 2011
"Waterfall", Pencil on Panel, 14"x11", 2011

Hahaha. Got this great image from Portugal based Mr. Phomer earlier in the day. Which side do you stand on?
About Mr. Phomer: "Son of the 1980's, raised by wolves, ink, super heroes, polaroid pictures, video games, cartoons, the cold war,

Winnie Truong - Mini Interview Monday, 27 June 2011 /// Written by Trippe
Location? Age? Education? Website?
Toronto, 22, BFA in drawing and painting, www.winnietruong.com

How would you describe your work to someone?
I usually tell them that I make really big drawings of hairy faces where hair becomes an unnatural extension of personality and whim of the subject. The work is about challenging those heavily coded ideas about the beautiful and the grotesque that exist in our culture. However, I find it’s much easier to just show them on my iPhone.
Influences?
Right now I’m reading a lot of John Wyndham, H.G. Wells, Charles Burns, and revisiting the X-Files.
Cheese burgers or tofu burgers?
Double cheese burgers.

Working routine? Music? Time of day?
Most days I tend to wake up late, take shamefully long showers followed by making myself a hot breakfast. I ride my bike to my studio while running errands along the way. I’m usually in studio from early afternoon and into the night. While I enjoy the musical stylings of everything from Destroyer to the best of DMX, I prefer playing television shows on my laptop. Right now I’m in a three-way affair between Farscape, The Wire and Six Feet Under.
How do you pay the bills?
Art and abject frugality.
Tools of the trade?
A good supply of pencil crayons, sharpeners, erasers, painter’s tape, paper towel, and my laptop.

What are you really excited about right now?
Thinking about new things, and making new drawings for my next solo show in Toronto this September.

Nigel Peake @Needles and Pens Wednesday, 18 May 2011 /// Written by Trippe
Nigel Peake
In the Wilds
May 13 - July 17, 2011
@Needles and Pens
Hey, it was the first show we were able to make it out to in some time and we picked a very enjoyable one. This Irish 30 year old draws everyday things that surround him in the small Irish town he lives in (population of 50). When he's not drawing these things as seen in this show, he works on illustrations for a range of publications. He also wears large rimmed glasses and plans on taking Amtrack across the United States before flying back to Ireland via NYC. This is his first visit to the US.
Nigel holds an MARCH from the University of Edinburgh and received a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Silver Medal commendation for his architectural thesis exploring borderlands in Istanbul in 2005. His new book In the Wilds is also available at Needles and Pens.

Marc McKee at HVW8 Monday, 25 April 2011 /// Written by Michael Hsiung
Back in 1989 Marc McKee started creating skateboard graphics for World Industries, Blind, 101, Menace, A-Team and Almost. Probably most infamously known for his funny, offensive, and provocative graphics which were hugely popular then and remain so today. McKee, also editor of Big Brother Magazine for the first four years, later worked on Blunt Snowboard Magazine and continues to make art for skate companies today. Visiting Philadelphia artist Shawn Beeks and I went to check out this show, which we were both blown away by McKee's originals of some of the most notorious boards, from the Napping Negro graphic to Natas's Challegener Explosion board to the Fucked Up Blind Kids Series.

Whole Foods Rips Off Corey Arnold?
Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:57
Tucker Nichols emailed over this Whole Foods poster (below right) which looks a lot like one of Corey Arnold's photos (bottom left). Coincidence? Where they inspired by Corey's photo? Did Corey actually shoot the photo? Who knows and Corey is fishing for salmon right now (like this), so we can't ask him to find out.
Wait, on this Instagram, Corey Arnold writes "Ripped off!", so we guess that's your answer.
Whole Foods highly inspired by a Corey Arnold photo. Ripped off?

Homemade Tattoos (+How To)
Friday, 14 June 2013 10:00
Yeah, bad tattoos are basically a bummer, right? But they're also pretty much a rite of passage for bored and disenfranchised-feeling teenagers the world over. At least it was for about 95% of the people I know. Going to a reputable tattoo shop and getting a wizard or unicorn drilled into your lower back is totally fine, but nothing really takes the place of sitting around with a bunch of friends and some beers, enthusiastically taking turns poking each others' arms full of bad ideas-which actually is fun at any age.

Wonder if our old emails with Banksy are worth a few thousand dollars. It seems everything the dude touches is worth a million dollars these days! Nutty and much deserved.

The provocative Slave Labour (Bunting Boy) sold at a private auction held by concierge firm The Sincura Group at the London Film Museum on Sunday, according to Bloomberg news service. | Wendell McShine @Fifty24SF
Wendell McShine (lives in Mexico City, from Trinidad) opened his newest show, Raccoon's Law, at Fifty24SF on Saturday night. ARYZ was a tough act to follow, but McShine held his own in the space... With a combination of a mural, a video, and both drawings and mixed-media works on paper, the diversity of this solo show was impressive. The Raccoon drawings were especially attractive as the way he executed them looked like they actually had fur coming off the page, and you can only imagine how soft it would be to touch. I was lucky to see his work in person through this show, and I hope to encounter more in the future.

| The Tornatos in Moore, OK by Justin Clemons
I got there the day after the tornado came through. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. My mind just could not grasp what my eyes were seeing. | Daniel Chen @The Book and Job Gallery (SF)
The Book and Job Gallery (San Francisco) really stepped it up with the opening of Daniel Chen's loveBlast on May 4th. Complete with a doorman, piano player, old fashioneds, and some really nice paintings, I could hardly believe I was at the Book and Job. The paintings varied in size, and the show was balanced nicely between them, the spray-can work on the walls, and the smaller drawings displayed throughout. The kind notes Chen wrote on the walls are certain to brighten your day, and the rest of the work is definitely worth a look. It was a very classy evening and I hope they continue to intersperse shows like these into their schedule in the future
