 Her show opens Friday Feb 5th @Gallery 16 in San Francisco. We take a peek and some new and older works.
NYC based and long time Fecal Pal, Maya Hayuk opens "Feeling Space" at Gallery 16 here in San Francisco Friday Feb 5th... Below is a tiny preview of the show and a short interview with Maya... What can people expect from your show "Feeling Space"?
I hope a really good trip, or at least a sweet warmth and dampness.
How did you hook up with Gallery 16?
I should ask them - I really don't know, but they were one of the first galleries I frequented in the mid-late nineties when they were on 16th street. David Perry, the photographer, first exposed me to them. It was the first place I saw Margaret Kilgallen's work in a gallery setting and I always admired their programming and mission. It was really humbling and grounding to be invited to work with them.
How are things going in Brooklyn these days?
Pretty stellar. I was finally able to move my painting studio upstairs from the 11 x 10' space in Secret Project Robot I worked out of for the last few years into one that's 16 x 36'. It looks out towards the Williamsburg Bridge and the sunsets are out of control. My studio's inside Monster Island between Chris Gentile's, Lilah Freedland's and Kayrock Screenprinting and upstairs from Mollusk Surfshop, Live with Animals, S.P.R and Oneida's recording studio. There's a good energy here in Brooklyn that's very inspiring to live and work in. Wolfy and I, inspired with Mike Pare, started this thing called the Positive Future Prophecy Posse (P.f.P.P.) which is all about rejecting apocalyptic visions and fake prophets while embracing new energy and progressive responsibility. This kind of sums things up.
What have you been up to this last year? Projects/ shows/ life/ etc?
Jeez... so much. Learning how to paint on stuff other than walls. There's always been a disconnect for me between objects (paper, canvas, etc) and murals/ environments. A couple of years ago my friend Alice in Brussels suggested that I treat large pieces of paper as if they were walls and something just clicked. so - yeah - that's been a big breakthrough. I made a couple of stage set/ environment things and video for some bands I love (TV on the Radio, Pale Hoarse, Akron Family, Animal Collective and a Dan Deacon show with Lauren Luloff), album art for Home 17, had a solo show at A.L.I.C.E. in Brussels, at Cinders here in Brooklyn, made a crazy sculpture at Scope Fair with Ben Wolf, did a collaboration and performance at SFAC Gallery with Chris Duncan, Brian Nuda Rosche and Kyle Ranson and took part in a bunch of group shows around. I travelled to Chile with a bunch of friends (first time in South America - fucking killer), celebrated my mom's birthday in Mexico, greeted my brother and his girlfriend's super awesome baby, Sophia Lotus, broke my face falling off my bike (going too slow up onto a curb, flew off the front of my bike and by trying not to land on my right arm, I face planted and chipped my front tooth so now I look even more like a weird, retarded rabbit), saw a ton of good music and art, made new friends, rode my bike, practiced some yoga, made sweet, sweet love to my incredible boyfriend, etc. The End.
Have you been creating many murals lately?
Yes - always. The walls of Monster Island ("This wall could be your life") is always in full swing weather permitting, I started a piece in Orange Alley behind Receiver Gallery, painted a massive wall in Santiago, Chile. http://mayahayuk.com/murals.html

Gallery 16 is pleased to welcome Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk to her first solo show with the gallery. Hayuk is a prolific muralist, photographer, printmaker, painter, illustrator, and documentarian. Her fearless attraction to wild color, a genre-bending mix of graphic design, graffiti, illustration, and abstraction has earned her a wide international audience. HayukÂ’s work overflows with a uniquely cultivated handmade aesthetic . Part punk, part psychedelic explosion, her paintings, prints and murals display unbridled enthusiasm. Her monograph "Just Good Vibes" describes the work "Multicolored diamonds morph into rainbows on public walls, day glow birds and flowers sprout extra appendages appearing both beautiful and menacing, and everything eschews logic while making perfect aesthetic sense. Hayuk's bold images of colorful beauty are at once visceral, ethereal, humorous and political."

Last Friday we were pleased to open up Dave Kinsey's first solo show in San Francisco since before 2000 when Dave was doing a lot of work in streets with his then work partner Shepard Fairey. A lot of the smaller works are homage to that era, i.e., the titles are San Francisco street names. Love his new direction.

| STREETOPIA @The Luggage Store
After our Dave Kinsey opening last Friday, we made our way down Market Street for Luggage Store's opening of STREETOPIA. Ran into a lot of friends and was amazed at how transformed the gallery was. Multiple rooms built out to include a Free Cafe, a theater, a gallery/studio, and a library. Streetopia will host free performances, teachings, and talks in the city every day for the show's month-long run and, thus, will provide a temporary space that offers opportunities for participation, agency, critical thinking, learning, sharing of ideas, and tools for community building that will reverberate in the real city after the city we build in the gallery is long gone.

| INTERVIEW with Tristan Patterson
Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.

| Interview with Jeff Depner
Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.

New Fish Print

Our buddy Jeremy Fish has a brand new print The Golden Hills out through Upper Playground. The print is made in an edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist, and printed at the fantastic Bloom Press in Oakland, California. 18" x 24" $100
This drawing was inspired by that looming feeling that San Francisco is an isolated island from the rest of the country. As SF becomes more and more expensive, and the lower income creative folks that make this city pulse get squeezed off the island, "the city that knows how" will slowly transform into a sterile west coast Manhattan full of tech chads and internet gurus. —Jeremy Fish

Marc Jacobs vs. The Graffiti Artist, Round 2: When Jacobs Turns Vandalized Store Into $680 Shirt <-- Earlier this week, on the night of the Met Ball, the Marc Jacobs boutique in SoHo was hit by French graffiti artist Kidult, who has famously vandalized Supreme, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton, among others. The Asian Art Museum opens their grand first contemporary show PHANTOMS OF ASIA with a massive preview party this evening with DJs, food, and other goodies 7:30pm - midnight ~details
We went to the press preview yesterday and should have some photos to share, but time constraints due to preparations for our show w/ Dave Kinsey opening Friday and the lack of a mayor Ed Lee which all were waiting for... Well, we had to bail before they let us preview the show... What we've seen online looks great and tonight should be a blast. See you there.
