Some graffiti, Needles & Pens, Creativity Explored, Michael Rosenthal Gallery, and Linc Art. I spend a lot of time in front of a computer... After an awkward evening trying to articulate a story to a friend, and wishing at that moment that I could just email the story to her, I realized that I need to get out more and actually speak with more humans. San Francisco has too much to offer... So on Thursdays, I'm gonna grab my camera, hop on the bike and see what I can get myself into. Kinda like our previous Arting Mondays... Didn't plan this Thursdays adventure very well, but knowing that there are a lot of shows about to come down, I thought I'd check out some that I'd yet to see.

The other day I noticed this little ledge right by the gallery. No cars parked, it could be a nice lunch break.

And across the st from there are some older works.

Old signage is great.

Been awhile since I had a slice at Deja Vu pizza. Pretty great minus the homeless dude who came in smelling of some nasty piss... Kinda takes some of the flavor out of your lunch.

Right next door is Creativity Explored which is a nonprofit visual arts center where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art... They always have interesting work.

The current show Repetition runs April 30 through June 17, 2009

Lots of nice work at reasonable prices.

Then headed on down Valencia to Michael Rosenthal Gallery since I've never been inside.

Veronica De Jesus: "Do the Waive"

Michael Rosenthal is proud to present Veronica De Jesus? first San Francisco solo exhibit: Do the Waive. Based in Oakland and working nationally, De Jesus creates images that dive to the root of that which she personally questions, the intersection of culture and commercialism. The upcoming Michael Rosenthal show exhibits De Jesus? newest body of work, which focuses on the imagery of iconic minority baseball, basketball and football players with a humorous and bold commentary on the economics that perpetuate their popularity.

De Jesus describes her new drawings as being created through a process of observing how sports is pushing our economy, and how sports reflects the dreams, ideals and ambitions of the populace. Growing up my dad, brother and I watched sports as regular every day fans.

Then swung through Linc Art as they were about to open the Award Presentation & Opening Reception for the 'SMART Art – Trash into Treasure' exhibition.

The SMART Art 'Trash into Treasure' competition was launched earlier this year with the goal to show the world that discarded items can be re-designed, re-used and re-thought into works of art and every day functional items.

The strongest finalists have been selected by an acclaimed panel of judges that include representatives from both the Art & Environmental Community including: S.F. MOMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Artist in Residence Program at S.F. Recycle, The Independent Film Channel, The Sundance Channel, MTV Intl., as well as environmental luminaries David de Rothschild, Paul Hawken and Annie Leonard.

A really great smart show worth checking out. Turn trash into interesting works of art.

Because there was so many large works to be shown, Linc rented the empty building adjacent for the month.

David de Rothschild who runs Adventure Ecology & Sculpt the Future Foundation is also the guy who's trying to build a sailboat out of Pier 31 right now with hopes of sailing it to Australia bringing enviromental awareness....

There's an interesting story in The New Yorker about David and his boat project...

I wish them luck. Don't think I'm brave enough to risk my life on that. Read too many sailing ocean stories to know that it ain't easy and you want a solid ass boat. Anyway...
