He's alive with Nikki McClure art shows, a grip of hot dogs and heads to Oakland for the Budget Rock Festival @The Stork Club.
Hi, it's me again. ...Andrew. Remember? I know, I know, it's been a while (yes, it's November!). I was thinking that my flakiness would never happen in the future, because in the future blogs will become obsolete. Humans will be able to log into each others minds and instantly see what's occurring in another person's life. Forget RSS and pesky bloggers that never update their sites, because daily life will be like the film Being John Malkovich. Everyone will know everything about everyone. Yes, indeed. This is my prediction.
Until then, let me run down the latest happenings. September was a doozy - the boss and his lady friend got married. I didn't really take too many photos of the wedding, but Jesse did, as did Groshong (the flip video is not to be missed). I had myself an art show at N+P, and then October rolled around and Nikki McClure came through town for a show. (Remember her interview last year on FF?)

The show is amazing, and lucky for you, it's up until November 11. Here Nikki chats up some fans.

Her works are intricate paper-cuts, all done by hand, and super labor-intensive.

Chris Koperski and Andrew McKinley were at the opening.

You really need to see them in person to appreciate the amount of work goes into each piece.

They don't really translate well to print or computer screen - they look like ink drawings, but they're far more insane.
Terry "T-Bones" and her friend "Sassy-Pants" attended the opening.

This one's called Treasure 1

Nikki McClure and family stack it up. See you next year guys!

This last weekend was also the annual Budget Rock Festival in Oakland. I got Saturday off and Barted over to indulge in the festivities. It's a four day fest, but Saturday was the best of the days in my opinion.

Oh Oakland, land of Giant Burgers,

Offerings of golden teeth, questionable repair services,

And home of the Stork Club.

First up - Christmas Island from San Diego. Pretty great, they rock a lo-fi post punk sound (one of my personal favorite sounds). God, I have to say the influences listed on their myspace page are among my all-time favorite bands, almost enough to like these guys without even hearing 'em. There is some sort of strange post-punk resurgence happening in So-Cal.

Did I mention, there was a Taco Truck parked outside the entire day!

Local SF boys The Nodzzz were rad too! ...Catchy as hell, post-punk/garage bliss in a Desperate Bicycles, Swell Maps kind of vain. Check 'em out. (I need to buy that record I saw in the 7" bins @ Amoeba).

Who is this strange attendee in Hot Dog garb?

Bare Wires. Thumbs up! The Oblivions meet Johnny Thunders kinda sound.

Bare Wires. Dig.

The Hot Dog man is an MC to some strange gluttonous competition....

Alright, Folks you've got 5 minutes to stuff as many hot dogs down your throat as possible...

GO! And their off! The dude on the right in the blue t-shirt should've won this contest with ease. He does this insane blog called Inhuman Eating Machine, where he eats like 20 tacos in a single day.

Behold the hot dog devouring ferocity of Mark Murrmann.

The buns were like french rolls, hearty shit.

Ever heard of a similar contest held in Sacramento called the Peep Off? It's insane.

At this point, I took a step back for fear of being sprayed down with hot dog vomit. Mark Murrmann came in second place for eating 7 hot dogs.

The end. The winner swallowed 8 dogs, America. Only one puker.

The Mayyors took the stage post Hot Dog destruction. Something disturbing was summoned from the nether regions of hell in the midst of all that hot doggery - and it took control of these dudes. Demon possession is the only explanation.

The Mayyors are easily one of the best bands in the Bay Area. Am Rep styled speed sludge, that's oh so smooooth.

The exorcism. Be gone demons! Be gone!

(KARP was phenomenal)

Meanwhile outside @ the Taco Truck

Chris only ate three hot dogs in the contest. Valiant effort, nonetheless, ...especially for a vegetarian.

You never have to leave Budget Rock. Eat, Drink, be entertained, all in one place. It's like Chuck E Cheese.

Things started to get a little blurry after 8 hours...

The Lamps are awesome and the last band I captured before my camera died...

After my camera died, I did what anyone would do in that situation - I ate a taco.

One more Lamps shot for good measure.

Dulce helped organize this event. She did a good job. See you next year on the weird punk day. My camera and flash are now in the hands of the Nikon Laboratory scientists of El Segundo California. Let's hope they get it back to me in a timely fashion. Maybe next time, I'll have to do an analog-blog ...or maybe, they'll invent those retinal webcams! Okay. bye, Andrew
PS - Needles & Pens is a good place to go shopping. Also, I heard Other is having an art show there on November 21st. {moscomment}
