Aye Jay's son, Cohen, collabs with Tiffany Bozic, John Stewart, and UPSO w/ interviews with the artists.
Aye Jay emailed us awhile ago to let us know about a project he and his son have been working on that we'd like to tell you all about. It's pretty swell... His very young son, Cohen, (think he's like 6) does this water color paintings and then Jay sends them onto established/ talented artists to have them do something on top of it- a collab, if you will. The idea is to collect all of these great works of art for his son so that when he gets older... well, he's going to be pretty damn stoked to have such a great collection.
Below is just a sample of the 80 or so collected thus far. We'll post some more in the near future! This round features John Stewart, Tiffany Bozic, and UPSO. Do you know which 2 out of the three are from Ohio?! -Trippe
John Stewart

Three art heroes alive and dead alive?
Raymond Pettibon, Colin Self, and David Hammons
dead: Jean-Michel Basquiat,
Nam June Paik
(He just passed away), and Francis Bacon
i like that your work uses many types of formats, what is your favorite medium to work in and why?
I guess that I have always been more into the concept than the medium. So I tend to let the idea steer me toward a way to finish it. This turns into a bunch of artwork that to a lot of people lacks continuity, or a consistent "artist voice." I think it is a question of them not looking deeply enough. Oh, I guess that didnÂąt answer your question. India Ink drawings. (See Pettibon above.)
biggie or pac?
How bout Biggie Pac? Tu Smalls? Too hard to choose. If pressed I guess I have to go with Pac. We are livin west side after all.
thanks for telling me about fecal. what do you like the most about the site?
It started at first with the calendar of events and art openings, but as the site has grown I think it is now the blog section (Giant's and Trippe's) and of course Sunday Morning Movies. So good.
you had said when starting cohen's picture, you were thinking about snakes, whats up with that?
I had just been in the Yucatan peninsula for a few weeks learning about the Ancient Maya people's customs. Their kings and queens would conjure up a two headed serpent that they believed would allow them to see the future, and speak to the gods. They also drank large amounts of a tequila-like drink and chewed hallucinogenic leaves to see this snake. Must have been Cohen's cosmic color scheme that inspired the comparison.
last five albums you listened to while making art?
has living in san rafael helped or hindered your pursuit of your art?
5. NYUB podcast #34
4. Modest Mouse - Sad Sappy Sucker
3. Beans - Now Soon Someday
2. The Coup - Party Music
1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
It hasn't helped, but being so close to SF makes it pretty easy to stay connected to what is going on. It just takes a little more effort on my part
to stay in the mix.
Tiffany Bozic

on your collabo, cohen said "maybe the birds are looking at the bugs, or are they going to eat them?" any comments?
well, you better ask him "maybe the bugs are looking at the bird, or are they going to eat it?"
3 art heroes alive and dead?
your favorite bird to draw/paint?
alive: girls first: frida, o'keefe, hesse. dead: now boys: audubon, Rousseau, and Cohen
right now I'm painting a snowy egret. they are so delicate.
what's the neatest thing you learned on your south america bird trip?
I went to papua new guinea for a couple months. I learned how to let go to everything completely. that was 'neat'. i learned how to boil tree frogs in a bamboo shoot over the fire and eat them whole.
woody woodpecker or big bird?
they both scared me.
last song you danced to? made art to?
Nina Simone "in the dark" the most tempting song in the world.
is the bird really the word?
beats the bird out of me.
how are you?
just peachy.
UPSO

both you and your wife are graphic artists working out of toledo, what are the advantages and setbacks not living in a big city to pursue art?
The advantages to me are way low cost of living, chill people and an cultural environment that is really desperate and open for stimulus, which makes doing fun art projects really easy to do.
The big set backs to me are a lack of decent gallery spaces or curators with any idea of what is going on in the world. There is a real brain drain in cities like Toledo.. so often times the interesting people flock to bigger places like chicago or ny. Also.. when you are in a bigger city you are closer to your market and in today's corporate sponsored art world, living in Toledo kind of keeps me out of the minds of big money.
art heroes alive and dead?
alive: Mike Giant, Seymour Chwast, David Byrne. dead: Keith Haring, Tibor Kalman, Dr. Seus
having made faesthetic for 5 years now, any words of advice for
other self-publishers?
Understand your market. It's worth the gamble of investment (time & money) but don't assume anyone is going to give a shit if you make a magazine. More than likely they wont.
whats the last song you danced to?
I don't dance. Im much to big and awkward for such things.
though i'm sure it varies, what kind of thought process to you have
going into a freelance art job?
I pretty much know what something is going to look like before I make it.. so i just sit there and think about what its supposed to look like, and then i try to come up with the weirdest most labor intensive way of producing it.
having done clothes, posters, books, toys, and fine art, is there
something you would like to do that you haven't yet?
I would really like to do a production skateboard, I would really like to do a shoe, I would really like to do a book of self portraits, I would really like to do art shows around the world, I would really like to open a restaurant, I would really like to learn spanish or japanese, I would really like my new record label to be successful enough that I can start signing and promoting bands, I would really like to become a professional body builder and I think someday id like to have a kid or two.
do all roads lead through toledo somehow?
If you are driving a Jeep, yes.
