Just a week ago Jafon Hakkinen of Receiver Gallery and I (Steven Weinberg/intern of Receiver) went over to Sarah Applebaum's studio in Lower Haight to see what she was up to for her upcoming show with us Soft Core. (Show runs May 23rd to June 26th. Opening May 23rd 6-10 pm.) No, that is not Sarah, but one of her two dogs. Behind, some of her new knitted works.
Standing up, brushing dogs aside, you can see into her living room/cave she's created.
Here's a better view of her cave, and Sarah (and Jay) too. Sarah said she wants to create a waking dream space with all these works where, as she put it, "everything has meaning and yet meaning escapes definition." These shapes are all bits of painted cardboard painted suspended from the walls with string.
Here's a better view of the shapes, giving a sense of how they hang off the walls, with some of that classic SF moulding behind it.
The cardboard is then held up with a pulley array which connects to...
...this lovely set of T-Cleats. Quite nautical. Wait, are we on the Trippe's boat or in Sarah's studio?
Arrg, no. The studio. Sarah explained the pulley array was the work of her boyfriend, Shannon, seen here taking apart a MacBook Pro (shit--by showing this did we just void his warranty?), who seems very mechanically minded.
Sarah's also been working on this sort of hairy looking paper surface.
It's pretty incredible and drapes to the floor on one wall of the studio, part red, part green, part pink.

Sarah explained that whole form is made from individual tiles. Each is an 8.5" x 11" sheet of colored paper printed with a pattern she then cuts.

Sarah's also working on a much more elegant version of the tin can-string telephone. She's using a vacuum tube for which she knit a sock. (Really excited to see where she is going to put that in Receiver.)
Vacuum tube telephones and... guns. Jay should watch where he points that thing.
Oh. And that thing, too.
Well that's about it. Sarah will be installing this at Receiver for the next few days until the show. The opening is on May 23rd, 6-10 pm. See you there!

| INTERVIEW with Tristan Patterson
Director of the documentary film DRAGONSLAYER --> DRAGONSLAYER is a documentary about the skateboarder Josh "Skreech" Sandoval. He's a character and the film follows his many ups and downs dealing with young parenthood, competing, and relationships. However, rather then try and make some type of statement about him, it just presents him objectively in the way that he is through wonderful cinematography.

| Interview with Jeff Depner
Whether conceptually motivated or intuitively created, the process of painting has been a main attribute in art for sometime now. Controlling the surface of a canvas is at the root of most contemporary painting. Vancouver native Jeff Depner's work creates avenues for visual discovery through a process based aesthetic. Layers upon layers of paint each relating to the next. Masking some, if not all, of the past creates a visual history within. The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of 'improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting.

The Asian Art Museum opens their grand first contemporary show PHANTOMS OF ASIA with a massive preview party this evening with DJs, food, and other goodies 7:30pm - midnight ~details
We went to the press preview yesterday and should have some photos to share, but time constraints due to preparations for our show w/ Dave Kinsey opening Friday and the lack of a mayor Ed Lee which all were waiting for... Well, we had to bail before they let us preview the show... What we've seen online looks great and tonight should be a blast. See you there.
