I'll admit it, I have an unhealthy addiction to Half-Frame cameras. In the last few years, I've assembled and hoarded a small collection of them while scouring the Earth for the perfect half-frame camera. My addiction to these relics is unhealthy, yes, but only in that I've wasted too much money on what's turned out to be mostly junk. Oh well, what are you gonna do? Here's of what I've ended up with over the years:

A. 1961 Olympus Pen EE . Acquired on Ebay for $30. Status of operation: The shutter sticks, feels like it's permanently set on Bulb mode. General feeling about the camera: Basically worthless, except for long-exposure night shots.

B. 1968 Olympus Pen EES-2. Acquired for 30 Yen at a Tokyo Flea Market. Status of operation: The lens is loose and stuck on a setting that only allows for shooting in bright sun light. General feeling about the camera: It's my favorite. Despite the the lens and setting problems, it's dependable for shooting under said circumstances.

C. 1960 Olympus Pen S. Acquired for 40 Pesos at Flea Market in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Status of operation: Structurally sound, but has a light leak. General feeling about the camera: The light leak bums me out and I really don't use it.

D. 1963 Olympus Pen F. Acquired on Ebay for $(...I'm ebarassed to say). Status of operation: Solid. General feeling about the camera: It's a bad ass machine, half-frame SLR with interchangeable lenses ...what's not to like?

E. 1961 Olympus Pen EE. Acquired as gift from Paul Schiek. He said, "you can have it, maybe find someone who can fix it." Status of operation: The lens is hanging by two wires from the body of the camera. General feeling about the camera: It's a nice paper weight.

Half-frame photos are the only kind of film I honestly still shoot. Digital just can't replace the uncalculated effect of two different frames being placed next to each other on a single print. There's too much control in the digital realm, being able to instantly delete a photo eliminates the "happy accident" effect you get in an analog half-frame shot.

This year I though it'd be cool to put some photos together and make something with them, something practical, ...like a Calendar (I figured that might sell better than a page of artsy photos on their own). So, I got busy drawing out the dates for next year.

...And then the months. I really like the way hand drawn fonts look as opposed to computerized fonts.

After I finished drawing out the year and picking photos, everything was scanned in and layed out in Indesign. Slowly, but surely, a calendar began to take shape.

And ouila, the calendar for 2008th year after the death of Christ was complete (doesn't it seem like just yesterday that Jesus died?? wierd.).
I reckon it looked good, so from the Indesign file I made a hi-res PDF and electronically zapped it over to a press in the East Bay. (dear internet, there's also few full-frame shots thrown in the calendar too, I know)

Five days later a nice fellow dropped off four boxes of calendars at Needles + Pens, hot off the presses (fresh print jobs smell so good). Rad! MIssion accomplished (...my credit card bill is not going to be rad)

I packaged them in nice mylar bags with a handy descriptive card, and they were ready to be consumed by punctual art enthusiasts everywhere. Maybe you'd like to purchase one, yes? Radical, go here.

Besides blowing my money on antiquated camera junk and making calendars, I've been working on a zine for the upcoming Rich Jacobs + TIm Kerr show in December at N+P. ... If I was a professional gallery operator, I'd call it a "catalogue" (oui, oui, wheres my beret?), but since I'm punk rock, I'll just call it a zine.
