We got another round of Cohen's great collabs and interviews! Read below.
Aye Jay emailed us awhile ago to let us know about a project he and his son have been working on that we'd like to tell you all about. It's pretty swell... His very young son, Cohen, (think he's like 6) does this water color paintings and then Jay sends them onto established/ talented artists to have them do something on top of it- a collab, if you will. The idea is to collect all of these great works of art for his son so that when he gets older... well, he's going to be pretty damn stoked to have such a great collection.
Aaron Horkey - Interview below
I keep a poster wish list in my sketchbook for groups I'd really like to work with - it kinda runs the gamut from heavy to country to hardcore and back. Here's my current top 9: Lungfish Tom Waits ISIS William Elliot Whitmore My Morning Jacket World Inferno Friendship Society Court and Spark A Silver Mt Zion Mountain Goats Rad thing is, I've been able to cross off a bunch of my favorites from the list - Andrew Bird, Racebannon, Boris, Converge, Hot Cross, etc.
I'll list my top 3 for today, since this is always being revamped and rearranged... Alive: Chris Ware, Walton Ford, Aaron Turner Deceased: Ernst Haeckel, Rand Holmes, Windsor McCay
I'm a working illustrator with a loyal fan base, fuck that "art star" bullshit... Seriously, I'm extremely lucky to be in the position I'm presently in - such a small percentage of artists are able to make a living plying their trade. And fewer still are able to pick and choose exactly the projects they make that living from. I'm living the dream I've had since middle school - I draw skateboard graphics, illustrate record covers and gig-posters, occasionally get to visit exotic locales on someone else's tab and receive boxes of free records, skateboards, and clothing on a fairly regular basis. I think it boils down to a combination of supportive parents, luck, complete lack of social skills, a dash of obsessive/compulsive tendency and the fact that I've spent almost every day since I was 4 years old with a pencil in my hand. Basically, you bust yer ass and success will come...
More often than not, I'll know exactly what the print is gonna look like as soon as I hear about it, which usually involves Wezz calling me and saying something like, "Sooooo, I know yer really busy but so-and-so wants a poster..." Usually I bite and knock out some rough sketches in case anyone needs to see something before we proceed, although I'm a big fan of springing the final, finished art on everybody and letting the chips fall where they may. Once the lines are inked, I'll do the extra text and separations for highlights, as well as any notes or color studies I may have, and drive it all down to my cousin Josh Generica for scanning and sending to Minnesota. If it's oversized, I need to bring it into Josh's roommate Tom's work and scan the pieces there. Once Wezz has the stuff, he assembles the layers and mocks-up a few color proofs, and sends it back here for me to look over and make sure all the holes are punched-out and everything lines up. Then screens are burned and printing begins at the BRLSQ studio. Once the posters are done they all get boxed-up and sent to the horrible, horrible so-cal where I sort, sign, number and stamp em before packing them up again and shipping em back to the Midwest...
More than you can possibly imagine. We didn't go home for the Holidays in '05 so I'm working on a six-month-plus leave of absence - the longest I've ever gone without setting foot on a gravel road or breathing fresh air. Hopefully we'll be able to get back before the whole festering thing slides into the sea, but if not I'm more than willing to take one for the team to see the shit go down... ...
Cody Hudson - Interview with Cody below
my friend cohen, there is very little difference between "rap stars" and pirates these days, so i would say you could call them all that if youd like (especially ones wearing eye patches). as far as a fire ghost, i don't remember drawing lil weezy in there but hes pretty close to that...
technically i'm from wisconsin, but i call chicago home. and i dont have a favorite lyric but i have favorite moments, one is him wearing a pink leather zorro / hamburgler mask, another is running into someone on maxwell street selling kells bobble heads for 5 bucks a piece (after he got maced and thrown off the tour with jay z)
tough to really call out as heroes but ill throw some names out there.....
dead: stuart davis, paul rand, charles and ray eames
alive: milton glaser, william eggleston, chris johanson.
i would say neither actually, also im on a new grooming schedule as my girl friend hates the beard so i shave from march - sept and blow it out from oct - feb, so i can balance it out.
my morning jacket - acoustica citsuoca tortoise & bonnie prince billy - the brave and the bold the rolling stones - let it bleed calexico & iron and wine - in the reins EP belle & sebastian - dear catastrophe waitress
i noticed that while watching the video the other day. i think they caught me on a big button day, when that was shot was around the elections so im rocking a "no war" button, a "not my president", and a "brainwash ington" one. i usually don't stock up like that.
i'm not really down with the button ups too much, but i did try and give up printed t shirts. it was just getting too crazy and over the top. one day i just gave up and sent a few bags of tees to the goodwill, and started buying the swap meet 3 for 5 white tees (black and gray are 2 for 5). makes my morning choices much easier....

those ladies are just a way of showing struggle. they are all knotted and tied up, but are never fallen or defeated.
it's pretty insane. for the most part, we are working and living together in the same couple of rooms, around the clock. honestly.....it's a challenge for both of us at times, but we have a shit load of fun and give loads of support and feedback to each other.

Cohen is right, you should steer clear of any animal made of drift wood, cruising fast on a wheel heel.
i tend to stay up very late. but, i swear that mornings are my most creative (before the everyday stuff starts to infiltrate). so, occasionally i try to flip the schedule and put myself to bed, so that i wake up for those rare productive hours.
cohen is extremely prolific, and has a really really cool dad.
